When those games were released, they were state of the art. Now, most users will let out a groan as to how bad the graphics were and how dull the gameplay was. It totally depends on the game.
For instance go play the original doom. Even today it stands up as one of the best games ever.
I will give you that there are a lot of games out there that everyone remembers fondly but weren't really that good. I'd say that Goldeneye is one of these, it was good simply because it was something many had never seen before, FPS + Multiplayer; but it badly needed refinement.
