TzaleProud Libertarian ConservativePremium join:2004-01-06 NYC Metro | RF Exposure It's funny that it took them this long to figure it out. Having a transmitter next to your head for long periods isn't exactly the "smartest" idea. Want to know what RF signals do your tissue? It heats it up, like a microwave... For example, running antennas for ham radio requires calculations to figure out if there will be RF exposure. Radio waves are safe AT a distance. With cell phones, a foot or two would be FAR safer. With high powered 50, 100 or 1500 watt ham radio stations you need more space around the antenna.
I have a cell phone, but I only use it when I have to. I am not really fond of phones anyway.

1 edit | Re: RF Exposure Ok so explain to me how I've been using a cell phone since 1992 for on average of 3 hours a day WITHOUT a headset or use it on speaker phone. Why don't I have brain cancer? If it is soooo dangerous and deadly one would think that 14 years of cell phone usage would bring about some type of cancer or tumor don't you think? The people who think a cell phone can make you sick are the same people who wear the stylish aluminum foil hats. I had an uncle whom never smoked, drank, or used a cell phone and developed a brain tumor so it's just a matter of odds if you get cancer. I do agree however if you climb a cell tower and get near the transmitting antennas yes that is very dangerous you could get serious burns.

I had an uncle whom never smoked, drank, or used a cell phone and developed a brain tumor so it's just a matter of odds if you get cancer. Who said 14 years was a long time? The average lifespan of a western person is far longer than 14 years. With the average kid getting a cell phone at 10 years old, you're telling me that it's a "good sign" if a 24 year old doesn't have brain cancer? I'm not a physicist, I'm simply telling you what I have read / studied. People take offense when someone tries to help someone. If you don't like what I am saying, then ignore me and do what you want. I don't stop using my cell phone, but then again I don't use it more than a few minutes per day.
Also, who is to say that you will even get cancer? No one knows. Each person is different. There are people who smoke 6 packs per day since they were 15 and are alive to 80. It simply increasing your PROBABILITY. Also, I don't know how true this study is with such a short study period. In my opinion with such a low RF gain from the transmitter, it would take far longer than the period that this study was conducted in. However, I feel safe placing my paycheck on the line in saying that excessive use of ANY RF transmitter close to the body will increase chances of cancer.
Much of the technology behind cell phones comes directly from amateur radio experiments. One of the most important things behind amateur radio is making sure that transmitting antennas are in safe locations. To be correct, the most important thing behind ALL RF planning is to make sure that the transmitter/feedline/antenna are in a safe location.

| Re: RF Exposure oh ok so it's INCREASED risk. I guess that's a chance I will take, If I eat a hamburger I increase my risk of heart disease, if I drive a car I increase my chance of being killed or serious injured in an accident. I could go on but I think the point is there. I am not going to stop doing something just because of a chance, increased risk, a possibility. I just think it is humorous when everyone starts screaming foul everytime a new technology or material comes along. -- 1.5/256 CenturyTel PPPoE DSL line | |

Had an MRI lately to check. Brain tumors don't have symptoms initially. It is only after they get to a certain size. -- -- Join Red Room Forum BLOG tkjunkmail.blogspot.com My Web Page

That is why I hate phones. I always have a quick conversation with someone. If you want to speak to me for more than 10mins you better come visit me or schedule a meeting time and place.
I don't know if that is an RF signal or what but it only happens when I use a phone and not some type of headphones.

With high powered transmitters, damage can be done in seconds to minutes (we're talking hundreds of watts). The average digital cell phone is under 1 watt.

| | | I totally agree with you about RF exposure. Just wondering that I have been using headset for some 5-6 years. Do you know if it's ok to continue using it for about 1 hour/day? I know TX signal is what matters the most, do you know how it decreases Vs distance? I wish I can get a headset that has 10 foot long. | |
