Re: redirects to look-up-results.com

Re: "dslextreme is now owned by a big company, they are not going anywhere anytime soon."

True, but I wonder if the company was in jeopardy of going out of business and/or losing money and if selling it was the only way to save it?

You're misunderstanding why this is important to SMTP.

Some SMTP servers refuse to accept mail from invalid domain names. If every domain name returns as valid, then they'll accept any mail.

This isn't related to how MX records work.

I'm aware of that. Most will balk if the A and MX records do not match, as far as I know. So it will still get bounced, as it should be, since they are not doing this for MX records.

That's incorrect. If no MX record is returned, the MTA will search for an A record. If an A record exists, it'll use that.

Ah that's right. Actually, I tested this yesterday with the new DNS server and sent a test mail to a bogus domain, and it did not go through. In the exim logs, I see:

2006-04-05 23:40:42 1FROAc-0000KQ-Cn ** root@bogushostnamethatdoesnotexist.com: Unrouteable address

So how is exim smart enough not to send to that bogus domain? If it failed to lookup the MX record (which it will), then it should fall back on the A record, right? It did not do that here at least.

Barring the "moral" issues with this, technically the DNS server doing this is very, very slow. I just queried a few bogus domains and it took 4 seconds for one of the lookups. Yikes!

*edit* even for a good host name looked up repeatedly on that server, sometimes it lags as much as a few seconds.

I\\\\\\\'m from another dial up isp, and we use it because dial up is crap money and its hard to make a return on it.

Its a white label solution from

Its for isp\\\\\\\'s to gain a little revenue back, but i don\\\\\\\'t think it makes it right.

I think this was a majorly bad idea and I don't know if it was a suggestion of the new ownership or not.

I'll just speak for myself here in that I want a nice, clean, direct connect with no adware lookalike/aol bloat etc etc addons.

I'm sure some users will think they have a browser hijack in progress.

As a long-time very vocal booster for DSLX, I am simply amazed that this redirect decision was made. Surely the quality folks at DSLX should have seen this user reaction coming, even before you made the DNS change. Like many others here, I worry that this signals the "big company making the decisions" and that is a very troubling thought.

Perhaps one good thing to come from this would be *IF* the "BIG COMPANY" learns from all this and somehow more clearly understands the DSLX user base and more clearly understands the reality of why DSLX has been such a great service up until this time.

DSLX had it right, it doesn't need to be "fixed" or "improved" by the suits. Doing so will kill this service, and then the suits will move on to "fix" something else.

You can spin this DNS "change" anyway you want, like how "its just there to help" but we all know what it is/was and the fact that DSLX did this kind of thing surprises/alarms us.

*Very* bad decision, guys.

Now, to all those considering DSLX: up until this moment DSLX has been [IMO] overwhelmingly terrific and has always been the absolute best choice for DSL service. Hopefully we will all learn from this and DSLX will return to being the best thing since sliced bread.

Let's keep our fingers crossed.

Cheers,
- Don

The DNS redirection system has since been turned off. Please see:

This was a trial in Southern California and never implemented in Northern California by the way.

When I do a search for "weather" in the address bar I'm taken to: »wwa.look-up-results.com/search?q···89793192

I'm using:
  DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 66.218.44.5
66.218.44.90
I've even released and renewed my IP now. I think it may take a while before the above behavior stops.

Did you set your DNS servers to the So Cal ones for testing? I think your browser may be caching your results. Can you please try to clear your cookies and cache?

Nope I never did just started last night.

I've done that already and rebooted even and same result.

If I type in an invalid site though the browser does a google search, which is what its supposed to do.

Re: redirects to look-up-results.com

A reboot should have done this, but try:

ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns

See if that helps.
