Comast HSI + Linksys RT31P2 = HELP! LaggyI have comcast hi speed internet that goes through a Motorolla SB5120 modem. I have vonage with a Linksys RT31P2 router. My cable is the basic one with no upgrades. My problem is that I can't host Warcraft 3 games, I lag during games a lot! I have AVG running with typical settings. I do not have windows firewall turned on, nor any other kind of firewall. I tried forwarding my ports, which did seem to help my torrent speed, but nothing else. I have tried messing with my QoS settings but they didn't seem to do anything so I reset them. The FAQ for the 2+ seconds thing says to do a line quality test, which I can't find. Can anyone help me figure out why: I can't host games I am unpingable I lag in games I tried to do the Line Packet Loss Testing and I get, sorry, is not pingable from www.dslreports.com, Please disable firewall ping protection. See this FAQ section for more information. The FAQ doesn't say anything about what to do to get pingable if you aren't using a firewall. I did the Tweak Test, which says: 1. Receive Window (RWIN): 256960 Window Scaling: 2 Path MTU Discovery: ON RFC1323 Window Scaling: ON RFC1323 Time Stamping: OFF Selective Acks: ON MSS requested: 1460 TTL: unknown TTL remaining: 47 Notes and recommendations: Choose RWIN between 5840 and 10220 (FAQ #586) download/use DRTCP .. (FAQ #578) Read the tweak FAQ
2. Test 67161 byte download Actual data bytes sent: 67161 Actual data packets: 47 Max packet sent (MTU): 1500 Max packet recd (MTU): 1500 Retransmitted data packets: 0 sacks you sent: 0 pushed data pkts: 8 data transmit time: 0.615 secs our max idletime: 2517.1 ms transfer rate: 20955 bytes/sec transfer rate: 167 kbits/sec This is not a speed test! transfer efficiency: 100%
Notes and recommendations: Good data stream (no/few rexmits) 2+ second stall detected (FAQ #1606)
and 3. ICMP (ping) check Target unpingable
Notes and recommendations: Become pingable if you need basic packet loss tests done Check tweak FAQ
I have downloaded and ran Dr. TCP and changed my windows scaling from Yes to Default, which has changed my TCP receive window to 65535. |

my cable and router were wedged between my monitor an my pc, along with some speakers. they have been moved. |

Signal levels are good.
Hook a PC directly to modem. Try a line test without the router. |

As soon as I change to just the modem, the following happens:
I am able to make games.
My packet loss gets much worse!
With BOTH, I got 5%, then 5% again.
Then with JUST MODEM, I got 25%, then I switched to both and got 5% then back to just modem and I got 15% then 10%.
So now I knoww the router is stopping me from creating games but what can the rest mean? And how can I fix the router? |

Try the modem to PC again, but with a different ethernet cable. |
|
|
sheesh I don't know what to think now...
I tried with a differenet chord - 0% I tried with the same chord - 0% I tried with the router again - 0%
And I'm not lagging in game, and I can host while using the router! Maybe it just took a bit for the settings to kick in...
also it's early so maybe I should check at night.
Thanks !! |

I had a hell of a time with that router....it seemed to be moody! one day it worked great then the next not so much....I recommend getting the Vonage standalone adapters and your own router.... |
|
|
yeah, it's back at 15% loss now and im lagging in game again =/ |

With what scenario? With router or without? |
|
|
well i did 3 in a row now.
router + modem 15% modem + blue chord 15% modem + white chord 25% |

Try the modem connected to PC via USB . |
|
|
19:00:54 Line quality 25% loss latency 87.4ms (modem-usb) 18:18:47 Line quality 10% loss latency 65.4ms (regular) 18:10:11 Line quality 25% loss latency 65.6ms (regular) 18:04:32 Line quality 15% loss latency 65.0ms (regular) 17:59:51 Line quality 10% loss latency 65.9ms (regular) 17:54:52 Line quality 5% loss latency 65.6ms (regular)
regular = modem ethernet -> router -> computer |

I'm guessing I need to try another modem somehow? |

Well, you've eliminated:
Router Ethernet cables NIC
Do you own or lease the modem?
It could be anything from your modem, cable/splitters or outside of your address. |

renting by the looks of my comcast bill, $3 a month. I am interested in buying a modem now, what would you recommend if my primary concerns are torrents, gaming, and voip? I'm using a linksys rt31p2, or does it even matter which modem I get really? I'm making a computer purchase from tigerdirect soon, might as well throw a new modem in there.
quick question too, i want to run two computers in the same room off the same internet, should I get 2 modems total?
edit: or just one modem -> router -> 2 comps ? |

My recommendation:
Linksys BEFCMU10 v4 modem.
Wireless router of your choice. Wireless for future expansion. |
|
|
do you recommend the linksys WRT54GL router? also I was wondering:
since I am getting a new computer next week and I'm planning on getting a new modem, if that setup has latency/packet loss still, then what could be going on? |
