Belkin F5D7230-4 v4000 always crashes on multicast

I have purchased a unit of F5D7230-4 v4000 hardware yesterday. The configuration went fine and easy.

However, when I plug 4 wired PCs to the LAN ports, the router will reboot (after about 30 seconds) and four amber lights are shown. After that all PCs displayed a 10Mbps connection instead of 100Mbps. From there onwards, no data can be sent/received anymore.

Curious to find out further, I setup NetIQ's Chariot to send some packets over. The router did not crash until I started the multicast testing. Multicasting one packet to IP 224.0.0.0 will immediately crash the router.

I guess all Windows computers does multicast once a while and that's the main reason router crashes.

I updated the firmware to F5D7230V4_UK_6.00.21.bin and it's still crashes.

Does anyone have this strange behaviour in their Belkin hardware?

Yes, this happens to me also quite regularly - sometimes every 30 seconds.

I found that the router became more stable by turning off Wireless and only use LAN + WAN ports. At least it managed to last for 24 hours before it needs a reboot from amber light. I'm using this router to support four Windows PC with very high traffic.

The source of the problem is router seems to go haywire when a broadcast packet is sent to 224.0.0.0. To reproduce, all you need to do is plug one or two Windows PC to it and it will crash soon. The funny thing is when it's showing amber light, all connections on Windows PC will drop to 10Mbps rather than 100Mbps. In other words LAN still works but slow.

No luck yet and perhaps I will test this out for a few more days until I find a solution to it.

I have just recently had the same problem start on the belkin F5D7230v4 after it has behaved itself rather well since January! I have reset factory defaults, etc, but still get the same prob with the amber light popping on. I am on ntl 2mb cable, and i have checked all of that side of things are ok.
I did upgrade the firmware, but i'm not entirely sure if a "factory reset" reverts this or not.....Anyone got any ideas?

I can't help much with the multicast issue, but I can say that resetting to defaults does nothing more than return all the values of changeable parameters back to their initial values. If you have upgraded the firmware, resetting does not "downgrade" the firmware version. Each firmware version has its own set of "default" configuration settings already embedded. You may change them to suit your needs, and if you screw up something and want to "start over", doing a reset is a quick way to get back to a known state.

thanks. is it possible to uninstall a firmware upgrade easily? I will investigate this, but if anyone has any other ideas, i'd be grateful!

Page 76 of the users manual describes in great detail the process of downloading and installing firmware. You do not "uninstall" firmware. What you do is simply perform the firmware update procedure using an older version of the firmware. If you want to go back to an older version, you must obtain a file containing the version you want to install.
