Team members come here asking for "Mojo" when they or family membes are sick, when family has passed and for their pets. In doing this, they are sharing pretty intimate issues in their lives. You don't do that with people you don't trust. They post for support because they know they'll get it. Then you watch our members pour out their mojo, thoughts, prayers etc, nonstop until it's no longer needed. It's pretty awesome. I sure hope I never need the mojo, but I'm glad it's here.

I worry that her CPU might overheat on us, and I can't afford to pay to have her fix it.

When I get back to work I want to get her AC and have a better HS/F installed on the system, so she can run it...

My greatest benefit of being part of this is the sense I might just be helping. I lost my mom from smoking, father in law from a tropical disease, and the list goes on, so fighting diseases is REALLY important to me. I used to feel totally powerless, as I am not a doctor or worker in the area of science looking for cures, but now that I crunch, crunch, AND fold, I don't feel so powerless.

Also, the very fact that we don't have a troll/abusive member problem in this forum, due to the good nature of discovery peeps, gives me an oasis of love (my old church is called that, heh) away from the unpleasantness in some of the other forums, and man, some folks in those forums are downright mean.

Too bad we all can't get together somehow to have a huge party in person, that would be a trip!

I am one of the "somewhat silent" followers in the background. Many of you I know...some I don't. I run one lowly little computer that I let crunch til its hearts content, when it decides to cooperate. With that being said...I know I make a difference.

I found here, it does not matter how much or how little you contribute, it matters . I did not know much about these clubs when I first joined BBR. Then after awhile, I slowly dragged myself in. I learned about the clubs, and understood what they meant. I learned more and more of what crunching is....and why I should do it. Its effortless, takes no work and your computer does it all. Does it get any simpler?

I have personally lost more than one family member to cancer. The hardest I would have to say was my cousin, whom I grew up with. I helped bury her 4 years ago. She left this world at 36, and left two young children behind. She had been diagnosed with cervical cancer, and her body was ravaged by it. I stood by her in the hospice and never let go, until I had too.

Then, not too long ago, a person I have never met in person, that I consider a dear friend....was diagnosed with cancer. We don't talk often, but hes constantly in my thoughts. I pop in from time to time to say hello, but even in silence, I know hes around. He is a person I look up too, and have learned alot from. I admire his genuineness and his strength. He doesn't know it, but hes a mentor of mine.

Cancer is an ugly disease. And I pray one day there is a cure. It strikes without warning and it can be very cruel. With all of our efforts, maybe one day there will be answers. I want to be a part of that. I want to help.

I see people here daily that have cancer, or know someone that has cancer...and this team effortlessly supports whomever is in need without question. That is what I call a "family". I have also seen people here fight the fight, and win. It makes a heart warm and happy to see such good being done in an internet world.

I am never a top cruncher or performer, and it makes no difference....we are a united team and every computer counts. This is my small part to hopefully one day rid this world of this ferocious disease. I am a part of our team Team Discovery. And proud of it. :D

Um, just a suggestion... don't run your cruncher through a KWh meter (yep, real, genuine GE meter, that hangs on the side of yer house ;)), all that crunching might be slightly tempered by the kWh's thrown into your electric bill! :O

Seriously, running a P4, 2GHz or more CPU has a huge effect on the meter disk. Literally, you can sleep the agent, let the system go idle, then wake the agent up, and in about 1 second, the disk will double in rate. Remind you, this is due to the CPU load ONLY!

But please don't panic. I forget the #'s (and will look them up for any interested parties, but the net $ per month, in Chicago, where we're um, raped from behind at $0.125 / kWh, is something like $10-15/mo. Maybe a little more. This is the desktop tower ONLY for the most part, as my monitor powers off for 90% of the time.

For added phun, plug yer Laserjet 4+ (heavy, boat anchor, reliable machine that simply will not die....), and during the fuser warmup, you might as well turn on all your stove burners cuz that disk becomes close to a blur! heheh

But it only takes about 45 seconds from a cold start. But the peak draw is quite impressive/alarming/big/glad it's temporary! heheh

OK, enough about kWh comsumption.

[sidenote]

If anyone would like details on how to connect one of the babies up to your system, and or any other device like fridge, TV, personal self (ab)use devices :P, IM me.

I can even supply a pic of the thing sitting on top of the puter. In the 5 or so years I've had the Dell, I think I've burned 10000 kWh or so. Kinda like a car. When new, all the dials are perfectly pointed to 00000.

Oh well. Easily altered if one wanted too....

I came to TD in 2001, and made a bunch of good friends as I spent a LOT of time in the forum. Then, a bunch of those friends left and formed another team. Over the months that followed I made a lot more friends. At some point I realized that my job was suffering because I was spending SO much time here in the forum. I had to back away. In the time since then, people have come and gone, and there are a many regulars here now that I hardly know.

But, it seems that the people who dedicate themselves to something like this are, in general, a very good crowd. There are those who start it for the novelty and eventually get bored with it and fade away.... but the people I'm talking about are the ones who stick with it. They've dedicated themselves to something bigger than themselves, and resolved to Make A Difference in the world.

With the state of the world being what it is, it's the rare individual who makes the time and effort to contribute to something like this for no reward. It takes superior vision to see the value in something like this when so much else is going on all around...

The quality of the people I am priveleged to associate with here, and the community that they form - that's what is so great about Team Discovery. I'm sure you could make similar arguments for Team Helix and the Dutch Power Cows, and etc. etc.... but I don't know those people. I know TD, and I know I like it here.

You people are very dear to me, and I'm not shy to admit it. As Bilbo said, "I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve." I've been slowly increasing my forum time in recent months, and I hope to get to know some of you newer folks better.

It surprises me not that the Princess of Purple not only started this thread, but for the most part pretty much answered her own question, pretty much, but not completely.

You all know the rollercoaster that my life has been over the past 10 months. There is not a person alive that can convince me that I would be where I am today without the TD Mojo that enveloped me in my time of need. I am but one of many that that Mojo has helped to overcome adversity. I am sure that the others would join me in saying that there are not words to express our heartfelt gratitude for all of you unselfishly being there for us in our time of need.

I met our Princess of Purple not long after she became a member here at BBR. Since January of 2003 Miss Lisa has become a very close friend. We have been through lots of things together, her first hurricane included. Some would call me a packrat, perhaps I am. Believe it or not, right now in my IM history there are 6,526 messages between the two of us, and that only goes back to January of 2004, so there is a whole year missing. We have talked about a lot of stuff. We have shared good times as well as bad. We have shared laughter and tears. She was always there, and knew just when to drop a message and say hello.

I know that I am not the only one that Lisa has helped over the three plus years she has been here. I know there are many others. And so Miss Princess of Purple, yes you are right that it is the friendships, the fun, the comraderie, the crunching and the many many out there that we all do our damndest to help. However, I am sure that it is nothing but pure unadulterated modesty that kept you from including yourself in that list. Lisa's drive and unrelenting enthusiasm are a very big and integral part of Team Discovery. I would go so far as to say that we are were we are today at least partially because of those qualities.

I'll undoubtedly be receiving IM number 6,527 within a few minutes for what I have just posted. That is okay though. We have disagreed about other things too in the past.

Most of us are originally here for the crunching. Because we believe in doing what we can to possibly find a cure to cancer. Crunching is easy though. It alone is not what makes us great. That's just a piece of it... Now I'm also here because I enjoy being surrounded by great people. I hope some of the kindness, dedication, brains and compassion will rub off on me. :) It would be hard find a better group of people...

So, hope of finding a cure is what brought this wonderful group of people together and I suppose it's that common cause that attracts this certain type of extraordinary person... so, I guess crunching for cancer IS what makes Team Discovery great.
