The cost issue is a huge smokescreen by those opposed politically to this particular law(CALEA).
The ability to intercept and monitor communications has been built in to networks for years. My dept could monitor all voice and data traffic back in 1998. And we responded to subpoenas to do so many times. The cost was just part of the network equipment needed to monitor and manage the network. -- -- Join Red Room Forum BLOG tkjunkmail.blogspot.com My Web Page

Cite sources. Data. You need to start using fact in your arguments.

Right, after all, if joe downloader can sniff his home network packets via snort on their i386 linux clunker then the ISP's and Universities should be able to do the same at little cost.

| | | Re: Is it really that hard? Granted...my work network only consists of a T3, and 85 point to point T1's to remote campuses each with a few hundred computers. We use fairly common cisco equipment and any one of the ports on the switches can be captured from any of the locations. It cost nothing extra, as the ability was build into all the switches.
I suppose if you needed to capture all the network traffic at once, it would start to be a problem.
