You realize that Automatic Updates, Background Intelligence, and Cryptographic services all have to be running, right? *EDIT* (Also ActiveX & active scripting).
You might try this: re-name the Windows Software Distribution folder to Software Distribution.old. Re-start the computer, then try Windows Update again. Once a new Software Distribution folder is created, you can delete the .old one.
Don't know this will work for you, but it won't hurt anything if it doesn't. Good luck!

Also, try this and see if it helps any:

Start > Run > regsvr32 wuapi.dll > OK
Start > Run > regsvr32 wups.dll > OK
Start > Run > regsvr32 wuaueng.dll > OK
Start > Run > regsvr32 wucltui.dll > OK
Start > Run > regsvr32 atl.dll > OK
Start > Run > regsvr32 MSXML3.dll > OK

Restart the computer and then try the Windows Update site again.

Can you check that the following services are set as stated and that each of these services are started or can be started:

Automatic Updates service - automatic

Background Intelligent Transfer service - manual or automatic

Event Log Service - automatic

By default I believe BITS is set to manual.
No need to have it set to Automatic.

BMW38-
Sorry, but I didn't give you the full procedure last time about re-making the Software Distribution folder. Again, it may not help, but hey, maybe it will! The steps are:

1.) Run "services.msc"
2.) Set "Automatic Updates" service to "Disabled". Then STOP the service! (VERY IMPORTANT!)
2.) Rename the Software Distibution folder "Software Distribution.old"
3.) Go to Control Panel/Internet Options/"General" tab
4.) Delete cookies
5.) Delete Temporary Internet files, or "Files" (off-line content also)
6.) Delete History
7.) Now re-start "Automatic Updates"

The Software Distribution folder will now re-create itself.
Once it has done so, you may delete the "Software Distribution.old" folder.

Again, best of luck!

Hey, I feel your pain! Don't know if I can offer anything further or not. Is everything else OK? Internet, e-mail, etc.? And what OS are you running?

If you have Firefox, you could try using this until you figure it out:

Good, at least your updates are current while you try to figure out the issue.
