It seems so very strange to go by it, and it's empty. Kinda creepy.
That plant has been going for so long I can't remember a time when it wasn't there.

Times are going through some bumps now.
Our place seems to hold a positive outlook here.

As an automotive equipment supplier, we usually lag the economy going strong into a recession, but when things pick up, we stay slow a while. At least that's what 25 years at my job here has me believing.

Dan's factory has closed so life may get interesting soon. He is down in Indiana right now helping another factory set up some machinery but that will last only another week or so.

Dan is working seven days a week. The factory he works at is being closed down this spring and he is looking for a new job but this can be hard in the Detroit and Flint, Michigan area as we have the highest unemployment stats in the country.

First they run some X-rays and MRI scans and thought they saw a spot near her lung. Thank God it was just a shadow upon further study. She went to cancer camp up in northern Michigan by Petoskey. Each camper is assigned a college age kid to help and she had a great time. She is back in school now and appears to be adjusting OK but it has been a bit hard on her to start. She is "different" and you know how kids are but she seems to be have a better time day by day. She can not run or participate in gym but the teacher has done a good job handling this problem. She is his assistant, she helps pick up balls etc. during and after class. And yes, her hair has started to grow but it is not much longer than peach fuzz right now but it is starting to turn her hair color. Her Muscles in the leg are quite weak and will be that way for a while yet. It will take a year for all of the cancer drugs to leave her system and then her leg can recover hopefully. I will post a picture as soon as she gets enough hair to have somewhat of a "normal" look.

That does mean she done at all. She will be going in for tests and to the one doctor or another for a while yet. She had to wait an extra week to get in for her last chemo as seems "normal" for her but she got out of the hospital and did not have to go back. And the doctor was satisfied with her blood test today.
From what I understand she will be seeing the doctor once a month for tests the next three years.

The last few chemo treatments were not the type that make one go bald so we are looking forward to seeing some hair grow soon.

Last post I was from you was on 10 June.
Guilty as charged.
She was released from another chemo treatment Sunday and is scheduled to go back in Thursday I believe. The last chemo session went very nice for her, no sickness and two girls her age in with her. The next Chemo session should be her last one! Of course this is but the end of the beginning so to speak. Then the wait begins. I do not know what happens next as far as the doctors are concerned. I will ask over the forth when the kids are out.

While we up north Rebekah's other grandmother had an operation on her lungs which so far appears to have been helpful. She has had a heart bypass and her lungs developed blisters and keep filling up with liquid. Hopefully she will improve now.

She was released from the hospital for only 5 hours when she developed a fever. Returning to the hospital she was already dehydrated, her blood count had dropped from 45 to 14 and was covered with sores. This was another side effect of the "chemo" called "petikia"(spelling?) She has stomach pain and it was noticed that her elbow was swollen and discolored. Right now she is in x-ray. We are praying for the best.

I suspect the bone cancer is treated, but the cure has been very rough.

I will rest easier hearing her blood count is good without transfusions. :hmm:

My Mom passed from not producing blood cells, and many transfusions eventually cause the body to reject the donated blood.

My prayer is that this sweet child will hit a positive turning point, and the body will do its job soon!

I hope to hear good news. Definitely many here hoping and praying and wishing the best.

The week of the 18th to the 24th of March she was supposed to be in the hospital for Chemo but her two blood tests were not good enough so she was sent home. The following week she did get in for Chemo and although it was the type of Chemo that usually makes very sick she felt OK all week. The doctor sent her home to give herself shots and this went OK.

On Easter all the kids were over to our house for the afternoon. Becca stayed in our bedroom as she felt real weak. All her cousins were in to visit her often but she was to weak to play and was running a fever on and off. Tresa started taking her temperature every fifteen minutes and it varied from 97º to 103º. A call to her doctor resulted in her admission to the hospital where she was given a bag and a half of blood. As of today (Tuesday) they still are not sure about how the infection was acquired but they are keeping it from getting too bad.

Several hours after the last post we got a phone call. Becca had to be taken into the hospital. She was running a fever and feeling quite bad. This morning the news is that she has a urinary track infection and is on antibiotics and has received two bags of blood. She is improving though and we expect to hear good news later today.
Good grief!!! I'll be so glad when they're all done screwing around with this kid, she's all healed up, and is home for good. Poor baby.... :(

Oh yes, I forgot about that. There seemed to be a difference between two experts on the length of her legs. And the one who was right said her legs length is perfect and he did not understand where the too short information came form.

She should be going home but she has had a urinary tract infection that they are not sure has been cleaned up yet and the medicine that is supposed to clear out the chemo meds never seems to do the job for her. The doctor says she may be going in for treatment until June because of this slow return to a normal blood count. The normal schedule would have had her done sometime in April.
Things could be far worse, at least she is feeling OK now.

I'm finally on-line again!!!!!!! You don't really miss it until it's gone! WOW What a roller coaster ride this has been. I want to thank my dad, rfhar, for keeping you all updated during my recent computer glitches. Don't you just want to slap the people that are writing those pesky little viruses!? Rebekah came home the day before Thanksgiving from another round of Chemo. Thank God indeed! We had a wonderful time out to mom & dad's. Rebekah is still doing good, but we have had some rough spots. Nothing a blood transfusion or two couldn't fix however. She did get a nasty little blood infection for a while, but that is done and gone. She started physical therapy this week also. She should have started a month ago, but we miss-understood her bone specialist. Oh well, no one is perfect. She has started to walk on it again already! Hobbling quite a bit still, but it is great progress. Still ahead of schedule. She needs to stretch out the hamstring muscle again. She has a goal to walk in to the family Christmas all by herself!

Last week she caught a urinary track infection but they are making progress in controlling it. This week it was diarrhea. Dan dthar See Profile thought that his hard drive failed but this last week learned that he caught a virus that messed the HD up. It is apt to be a while before he gets it back together as he is working 6-10's and has a three hour round trip to work. That does not give much time for computer work, nor is the computer the highest priority right now.

He is using Kaspersky, which is a very good AV, so I'm a bit curious.

They pulled the port out yesterday and if the infection clears up she may be able to go home for a day. She is scheduled to have another port put in Monday. Her mood is good and she appeared to be improving yesterday.

This last few days at home she has had a fever of 101+ and today, Tuesday, she was to be taken back into the hospital to start another round of chemo. But the fever has thrown a monkey wrench into things. The Oncologist said to bring her up anyway this morning to run tests and see about the fever among other things. The result is that the port where the chemo is put in her is infected and the doctor told the hospital to make room for her immediately. She will spend the next ten days at the hospital.
...not the best news by a long shot.

Yep. Thanks for asking. I have been waiting for that one more event to happen to post.

She was to start last Monday but all the beds were full. She received the call Tuesday afternoon and they started the Chemo.
First day was fine but the next was miserable. She was sent home Thursday night late. Rebekah is now giving herself shots at home. She insisted doing so herself. Yes mother is there to watch. Her blood cell count is just fine, good news. She is starting to plan where she wants go in her "Make a Wish Foundation" trip.

She should start another round of Chemo soon. The Oncologist delayed the start for Rebekah to get her teeth cleaned. Her regular dentist could not get to her for several weeks so her Teresa called my elder boy up in Gaylord and he fit her in the next day. How about that, a 180 mile one way trip to get the teeth cleaned? Of course she got to play with her cousins also and come back the next day.
She was quite sad at the idea of more chemo, it is not a n ice thing to do although it is needed. The teacher has her all lined up with plenty of schoolwork too.

The best I can give you is it should take several weeks for the bone splice near her knee to heal and several months for the splice near her hip to heal. They will decalcify the bone section they removed and section it to see what is there and then decide about the future but she likely may have nine or so more weeks of Chemo.

She was able to cut the bone above the growth area near the knee and below the hip and replace the "bad" section with a cadaver bone that had a titanium rod in it. The rod is held in with plates bolted through the bone. NO cast is needed. Rebekah is in pain but is recovering. Dan and Treasa are staying in a motel near the hospital in Royal Oak,(Metro Detroit, Mi).

This is Rebekah's dad. Good news! The doctors looked at her leg at the last round of Chemo, and said that they can visibly tell that the swelling in the leg has gone down. They have decided to skip the next round of Chemo and do the re-evaluation to prepare her for her bone replacement surgery. This is a full month ahead of schedule. We are going through X-rays, CT scans, MRI's, Bone scans, Audio-grams, and the whole nine 1/2 yards! WOW! Our consultation with the surgeon is this comming thursday. As long as everything turns out as planned the surgery will be the following day(friday 8/11/06).Who would have ever thought that a bone could be replaced!! I will try to update before the weekend. For one, it helps me know more specifically how to pray.
Rebekah is a daily concern for me, and I bring her to God regularly.

It is scary having a low blood count. I lost my Mother because her bone marrow stopped producing, although it was never called cancer.

I pray that 9 years old is a very resilient age, and that every day is closer to victory!

I wish I had all the answers. I do know that she is to have more Chemo after the operation. I get my info from my wife which works for us as I do have a hearing problem. I am doubtful on the surgery being Friday. I am not sure but what that may have been the original time line and not a schedule. Rebeccah has not been able to keep up with the time lines to very well as last week demonstrated. Time will tell.

Rebeccah went into the hospital on Monday the 24th and on Wednesday it looked like she would be out on Thursday as scheduled but Thursday's blood count showed too much "chemo" left in her system. She still is having trouble eating but they have ganged up on her for a long talk and she seems to be more understanding of her needs now. Her white blood cell count plunged low enough over the weekend that they gave her a transfusion. She was released from the hospital this last Tuesday and now is due for beaucoup tests preparing for surgery next Friday(?).

I apologize for not updating in so long, but life got a little nuts for a while. Rebekah is doing good now, although it got a bit bumpy with the last two rounds of Chemo. She was supposed to have 2 weeks back to back of a drug called Methotrexate. It was still in her system 8 days after the initial dose, so they couldn't give her the second one. Nobody knew why it was still there that long. It was supposed to be gone after a few days. The second week of that drug was skipped. She went back in for another round of Chemo on monday July 3. This treatment is the one with 2 different drugs(which I won't even try to list yet alone say)that really makes her sick for about 5 days after. She is doing fine now and is starting to eat a little better. The good news is that she had the best view in the world of the fireworks here in Flint, Mi. right out of her window!! That was real cool for her. Well, my job awaits. I will try to update everyone a little sooner next time. I get all my info third hand, which in my case is likely better as I have a hearing loss.
I do not know which chemicals are being used but I was told that the first two weeks was for one and the third week they change to another. The first weeks Chemo stayed in so long that they went right to the second Chemo this week without two sessions of the first chemo. This was a God-send as the chemo makes her so sick as it is given.

Rebekah is bald now, she started to shed so they shaved her head to avoid the constant cleaning bit. She went in for her chemo Monday the 19th expecting to be going home Thursday but stayed in the hospital because her blood count did not return to normal after chemo. dthar See Profilewent up Sunday and was able to get a wheelchair for her and take her on a tour of the hospital grounds to cheer her up a bit. More chemo is scheduled to start today.

It is an interesting experience watching smoke literally rolling out of your power supply!I have to say thank you to a very special person for sending me a new one. Well, Rebekah is home after her first round of Chemo. all is good now. She is moody and irritable and is having trouble understanding why this happened to her. Then again, so am I. It's pretty neat how God works sometimes. For the past two weeks, my pastor has preached on being "Under Pressure". Something he said hit me like a load of bricks. "The Earth is the only hell a Christian will ever know. Also, the Earth is the only heaven an evil person will ever know." I was stunned. I'll keep updating as things happen. She goes back for more Chemo on June 19.

In one of my more insane moments, I decided to let my hair grow out again, so that I could donate it to Locks of Love. Why I decided to do this at the beginning of summer is beyond me, but I did make the decision, and am well on the way now to becoming a shaggy dog again. I absolutely deplore having long hair, but at least I can pony tail it out of the way in the heat; it goes for a wonderful cause, and that's why I decided to do it again. No grey hairs yet, so that's a plus. ;)

I'm beginning to think there is a purpose for everything we do in this life. LOL!!! ;) :D For sure, Rebekah won't get this hair, but someone else can and will -- and that's all for the good. :) :D

They had to run six more tests last week before they could start and then had to hydrate her before chemo so they did not get started till last night about 9:00 PM. By 11:00 PM she was sick and they finished the chemo while we were visiting about 1:00 PM today. She was sleeping a lot and the closest I could describe how she feels is to say stomach flu.

We had a lighting storm go over and Dan received a lesson in not letting the smoke out of a computer. We all know that power supplies need that smoke to work. He had a protected type power strip but it was not good enough. A team member has send him a power supply already and I wish all could hear the way he reacted to that news. Hopefully not much more is bad but... He and a friend built the computer earlier this year out of new and old parts and his insurance may cover cost over $250 but how they will react to replacing or putting a value on a home brew computer I'm sure interested in learning.

The prayers are helping. The wife and I can see a change in the way the kids are handling the pressure for the better.

Many months ago I saw a program that was talking about some cold pack that is worn on the head while getting a chemo treatment. It had been reported very successful at retaining hair for women. Some hospitals were adopting the technique as a regular service.

I hope Rebekah is hanging tough. I hope she knows that Jesus is the light of the world and the word made flesh. My prayers are straight to the savior of this world. He who knew this sorry soul called Jim Nelson, and yes, a sweet girl named Rebekah before the world or even time existed! There is power in prayer. And for those who know this is not foolishness, He is there and listening.

Friday she had a biopsy and also had the port for Chemotherapy installed. The line goes into her neck but comes out down her chest where it can not be seen on young ladies. This took a lot out of her. Saturday my son-in-law took one of his daughters bunk beds over to Dan’s place. Dan and Tresa live in a single wide manufactured home and had one of those metal tube beds that are a ¾ lower and bunk top and no way could a wheelchair get into the bedroom next to it. The elder son is a Dentist and his wife a physical therapist (on kids) and they have been on the net researching and help Dan and Treasa understand all the stuff the doctors are telling them. Karen also found an insurance policy (Medicare?) that will help with bills that Dan’s normal medical insurance will not cover and a child sized wheelchair. Sunday Becca did go to church but spent a large amount of time sleeping in dads arms. Since then they took her to get a haircut etc. and then to have family pictures taken. That was a days work for her. They biopsy results are supposed to be Faxed up here today and she should start Chemotherapy soon. Rebekah also now has a portable DVD player to help pass time during Chemo.

My oldest has blessed us with two grandsons.

All ages are too young, but 9! Rebekah is a real pretty name, and I will pray for her, your family, and all the doctors and help that will be involved. I'll pray for wisdom, strength, patience and effectiveness. I am praying for 100% cure, and that Rebekah will one day look back at this time as a trial that she persevered and overcame.

I believe completely that there is power in prayer, Look to the doctors, but definitely look to God,

I'm so very sorry to hear that Rebekah has to go through this at such a young age. :( But Dan, your post that you have Rebekah at the best hospital and with the best doctor is hugely encouraging, and modern science can do incredible things these days. How on earth you're going to keep a 9-year-old quiet in a wheelchair is beyond me, but we'll hope for the best on that. I hear that bribery can go a long way. ;)

In the meantime, please know that I will be sending healing light to Rebekah, and will keep the entire family in a cirle of healing light. Please tell her for me, that all the little critters here are rooting for her, and want her to get well as soon as she can. :)

Dan Harbin here, I'm Rebekah's dad. First and foremost I want to thank everyone for all of the thoughts and prayers. Everything is appreciated very much.Here is the latest news. Her biopsy is tomorrow may 19 at beaumont in Royal Oak Mi. This is propbably the best hospital in the state right now. Her Doc is also the highest recemended as this is her specialty. The cancer is either osteosarcoma or ewings-sarcoma(?spelling?),we will know for sure tomorrow. We are looking at ~ 9 months of chemo and bone replacement after ~ 3 months of chemo. The Doc says she is going to use a donated cadaver bone, something I had never heard of but is really cool!! I will try to keep you updated.

We learned this last weekend that the eldest daughter (9 yrs) of my youngest son, dthar See Profile , has cancer, Osteosarcoma in her leg. And do they move fast after this type of diagnosis in a kid. A different place and doctor or test every day. She is going down to Beaumont Hospital tomorrow for a biopsy. Also somebody, I don't know who, is coming out to there home to bring a wheelchair and build a ramp tomorrow also. Chemo starts next week. They no longer amputate the leg but can you imagine keeping a nine year old off of the leg because she might break it? The details are coming so fast we are having trouble getting them in our heads.

Dan doesn't post at the site very often, but is a team member, about 340-345 on the list. I'll ask him to stop by but as he works a ten hour day with a three hour round trip to work...

Any time you have for prayers and/or mojo for the next few months would be very helpful.
