[Info] Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor Beta

quote:
The Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor is a small beta application that you can run on your current Windows XP-based computer to find out if it's ready for an upgrade to Windows Vista. When you run the Upgrade Advisor, it will scan your computer and generate an easy-to-understand report of any known system and device compatibility issues, along with recommendations on how you can get your PC ready for Windows Vista. Microsoft plans to add functionality to Upgrade Advisor, such as checking how your software applications will run with Windows Vista. Download the beta version today and check this site in a few months for a new version...

I ran it, and my system is ready, with the exception that there are some drivers that I will need for my Laptop if I decide to run it.

What we need to do is start posting our system spec's that we are running the advisor on, so others can get an idea what our baseline is.

Mine was a Compaq Presario 2570us Laptop with:

2.4Ghz Processor, 60gb hard drive, 1gb RAM, 64mb Video (onboard RAM), Broadcom Wifi, Firewire, 2.0 USB. It spec'd out to be able to run Ultimare without Aero of course, due to the Video spec's.

The Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor (Beta) suggested Windows Vista Ultimate for the following system configuration:

quote:
System_64-X2
ViewSonic N3250W 32" 16:9 8ms HD Ready LCD TV With HDMI
AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+
1GB TwinMOS Speed Premium PC3200 RAM
ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe
16 Pipe Mod Sapphire X800GTO2 @ X850XT PE Spec
ATI HDTV Wonder HDTV Tuner + SDTV Tuner
Sapphire Theater 550 Pro TV Tuner
Maddog BTX/ATX 500W PSU
Modified Castek CK-1018-1A Tower Case
MCE 2K5 SP2 RU2
I was only considering Windows Vista Ultimate or Home Premium since it was my understanding that these were the only two versions with Vista MCE.

The advisor didn’t seem to know if the video card could connect to a TV and in fact I am using a HDTV as a monitor via HDMI-to-DVI cable. The advisor also didn’t seem to know that I have MCE capable TV tuners but this all could be attributed to the beta not being able to connect to the server.

Yeah, it didn't realize my video card had a TV out (S-Video.)

But I guess thats why it's a beta product!

Also complained about free disk space but thats because my system drive is 20GB and 11GB is free (15GB req'd!) Plenty of free space elsewhere.

Guess I'm going to have to increase my minimum system drive space from 20GB to 40 or so...

Here's the relevant specs of my desktop that meet vista utimate requirements: (minus video capture)

Asus A7N8X Deluxe Rev. 2
Athlon XP 2200+ (T-Bred)
(2) 1GB Edge GRA-G5400 (PC3200)
MSI GeForce FX5600-TD256
Seagate ST320011A (20 GB - System)
(2) Seagate ST3200822AS (200 GB SATA150's in RAID0 - Data & Cache)
Hitachi HDS724040KLAT80 (IDE 400GB - More Data)
NEC ND-3520A DVD±RW
Pioneer DVD-106
Mitsumi Floppy / 7in1 Card Reader
