realism1 : Illustrator was probably used to create most of the original designs for the major studio's discs. It doesn't suck. If you need a template to guide your creativity, then you shouldnt' be buying Illustrator in the first place.

leXicon5 : Discus hands down.

Illustrator sucks pretty much. First, you have to OWN Illustrator. You can buy 20 copies of Discus for one of Illustrator.
Second, it's a circle...thats their idea of a CD printing thing...thats it. It has NO print alignment utility, or label templates etc. It sucks even if you OWN it and KNOW what you're doing.

Discus has EVERY CD label ever made nearly as well as every CD printer as well as the ability to use the printer that you have connected already.
Forget the lite version...while OK....you get SO much more from the full version.
--
We're ALL illegals people....ask the first real Native Americans.
linicx : Discus is included in both Toast and Popcorn. I just received the latest version of Print Shop for Mac. I haven't fooled with it too much, but it seems to have some nifty tools.

What I am curious about is 1-) whether or not I can use Omni Graffle to design a CD label from scratch, and then 2-) export it to use in Popcorn or Print Shop without a lot of trouble

PS: Popcorn and Toast both do a pretty darned great job of burning disks.
--
Mac: No windows, No gates, Apple inside

enckwanzer : Best one I've found is Discus. It's not free, but it's cheap and (IMHO) worth every penny. It's simple, but you can do complex and professional stuff with it too. Discus 4 (which is available as a demo download) is even better than version 3 was ... and that's saying a lot. Try the demo; it's free and can't hurt.

linicx : If there is free Mac software to design CD and DVD covers, etc., I have not found it. The exception is probably if you buy a new CD or DVD player for Mac It should include some graphics software. Otherwise there is Toast, Popcorn and, Printshop that can do it. They are all priced under $100. Anything else that will do what you want is probably going to cost more. If your friend wants to totally design from scratch and not use the templates provided, I don't know where to look. The folks that I know who design on Mac have been doing it a long time, and their software is pricey.

Good Luck!
--
Mac: No windows, No gates, Apple inside
