mbernsteBoostedPremium,MVM join:2001-06-30 Piscataway, NJ | Somerset county is the most affluent in America. America is the most affluent country in the world, which makes Somerset the most affluent governmental entity in the world. Hunterdon have residences owned by people with last names like Forbes and Onassis, what does that tell you? Middlesex has many poorer areas such as The Amboys and New Brunswick (the part not near J&J or Rutgers) so its hardly affluent. |

kamm join:2001-02-14 Brooklyn, NY 1 edit | said by mbernste:Wrong. On a GDP basis, the USA is the wealthiest, most affluent, richest country in the history of the world. No, you're wrong. It's not the GDP, despite your beliefs but it's the GNI. GDP is usually far from reality, only part of it. In our case it shows us in much better light but that's false perception. The good measurement here is the GNI. Gross National Income is calculated per capita too and US lags far behind countries I mentioned above.
From Wiki:
"Gross National Income comprises the total value of goods and services produced within a country (i.e. its Gross Domestic Product), together with its income received from other countries (notably interest and dividends), less similar payments made to other countries."
In other words it's the GDP + other taxes + extra *net* income (income from overseas by domestic residents - payments made from home to overseas non-residents) from abroad = Gross National Income aka GNI.
FYI: it used to be called GNP. |

| reply to mbernste said by mbernste:Somerset county is the most affluent in America. By what measure?
Wikipedia posted some data from the 2000 Census. At that time, Somerset County NJ was: • 7th in USA, by per capita income • 19th in USA, by personal per capita income • 7th in USA, by median household income

mbernsteBoostedPremium,MVM join:2001-06-30 Piscataway, NJ 1 edit | Well, that I have to do more digging, but look at the stats, NJ is the most affluent state in the most affluent country in the world. I probably have to see if NJ has some census data on a county basis.
I can always count on you, JT to keep me honest. |
