Re: I'm rejoicing! said by mbernste:Somerset county is the most affluent in America. By what measure?
Wikipedia posted some data from the 2000 Census. At that time, Somerset County NJ was: • 7th in USA, by per capita income • 19th in USA, by personal per capita income • 7th in USA, by median household income

I probably have to see if NJ has some census data on a county basis.

i'm pretty sure it is the richest county in the USA -- (1) It's either 99¢ or $0.99; not .99¢ (2) It's "so MUCH fun" not "so fun" | | kamm join:2001-02-14 Brooklyn, NY 1 edit | reply to mbernste said by mbernste:Well, that I have to do more digging, but look at the stats, NJ is the most affluent state in the most affluent country in the world. | reply to TheMole Yep. mbernste 's claim to most affluent in the USA stands (at least until we get 2006 census data). I'm going to hunt down some stats on Switzerland now. | | mbernsteBoostedPremium,MVM join:2001-06-30 Piscataway, NJ | Yeah, and Somserset was compared to Howard County, MD. Too bad I live in Middlesex County (but I do my food shopping in Somerset). See? I don't make these things up, I'm just not able to find the stuff as quickly as others on the Internet.
In the 2003 ACS, Somerset County, N.J., while not different from Howard County, Md., or Prince William County, Va., had the highest median household income ($89,289) of the 233 counties with populations of 250,000 or more in the sample. | | mbernsteBoostedPremium,MVM join:2001-06-30 Piscataway, NJ | reply to kamm said by kamm:As I wrote above, you are wrong. US is far from being the most affluent country. Then you need to read Wikipedia:
The standard of living in the United States is one of the highest in the world by almost any measure.
The article continues to say
The United States measures better under some measures of standard of living than others. Americans are some of the wealthiest people in the world, with a very high GDP per capita. Americans are top in the world for most material possessions. The numbers of televisions, vehicles, and other such products per person are considerably higher than in any other country. For instance, the United States has some 754 televisions for every thousand people; no other major state is even above 700, with Japan being closest at 680/1000. Why don't you do some research before you make blanket statements. | |
