Who are these people and how do they and The Leichtman Research Group suddenly become authoritative figures on who has what kind of connection?
What the numbers do tell you is that with such a wide discrepancy between their two results, that it's doubtful that anyone really knows for sure.
I think the numbers also tell you that when you apply a reasonable margin for error, that it's any ones game.
Personally, with DSL's pricing and promotion schemes of the last year or so, I would have expected them to BLOW away the cable competition if in fact, they really had anything that worthwhile to compete with. I mean, who here hasn't been enticed with..12.99 a month...come on down and get it, cause the price is right?
With THAT kind of aggressive promotion, these numbers should be blow away..in favor of DSL..no questions asked..80% have dsl..20% have cable.
But, they AREN'T that at all, and whomever's numbers you care to believe, the difference represents just a few percentage points either way.
I think that tells the real story here and that cable, despite it's generally higher cost, has many people staying with it and believing apparently that it's the better way to go.
This is NOT to knock DSL and those who have it. Many people have great connections and service and are happy with it. But yet cables speeds..no contracts..relative ease of getting connected..all have real value to consumers..and they're willing to pay for it.

At the lousy speeds you get for $12.99, I would never consider it. Verizon DSL at $30 for 3Mb or Road Runner at $40 for 7Mb.
For Granny, people on budgets, cheapos and technophobes >1Mb DSL is fine, but for actual power users, I wouldn't take DSL for free. |

Depends what you use it for Kids, teenagers, budget people don't mind 1.5mb dsl or even 768k so long as it is faster then dialup You be surprised how many are on 1.5 vs 3.0 or 7.0 A brother of mine pays only 14.99 a month for 384/128 cable connection that's a lot slower then 1.5 yet he doesn't mind so tell me why would he need anything faster. i guess its because you think its too slow?
You wouldn't take it for free eh??? sure, i think ya will you're kidding right? |

 | reply to Rick I have cable net but the only thing keeping me from switching from DSL is the fact it's not available at my location. This is probably one of the reasons why there haven't been huge numbers of ppl flocking to that $12.95/month DSL. As stated numberous times before, it's amazing how many people still can't get any HSI (in the U.S.). |

No Im not. I download Linux distros and videos from iTunes. I'm talking files in the couple GB range. It's bad enough on an 8Mb connection where I can get about 1 GB downloaded every 30 minutes. Anything less is completely unacceptable. Im hoping we get upgraded to 15/2 like Time Warner is doing in some areas.
I used to pay $85/month for Road Runner Premium, now that I have cable TV, it's down to $70. The pricing for my area is as follows, if you have cable TV.
Road Runner- $40 7/384 Road Runner Premium- $70 8/512
Thats how desperately I want speed. I think the fact I spend $30 a month extra for 1Mb down extra speaks for itself that I wouldnt take slow DSL for free. |

 | reply to BigRooster True. I'm one of the unfortunate people who don't have DSL or Cable available in my area. I would love to get anything better than dial up (excluding satellite because it just too expensive and not much better that dial up). |
