 | Some competition for iPod would be nice Getting some legitimate competition for the iPod would be nice. It might cause Apple to drop the price point from the very high levels it is at. And maybe even make it so that the iPod could be serviceable when a new battery is needed instead of being a virtual throwaway like Apple wants. -- -- Join Red Room Forum BLOG tkjunkmail.blogspot.com My Web Page |

I don't see how MS making a MP3 player will be any competition for Apple. MS is a software company and they have not had success whenever they try to make hardware. They stopped making Wi-Fi products and the Xbox has lost huge amounts of many for them.
Apple has lots of competition from virtually every other company in the world. Despite people constantly claiming that the iPod is overpriced, none of the hundreds of companies that make MP3 players seem to be able to get their act together and create something with the same features, size, ease of use, etc for less money. |

| Actually the xbox turned a profit on the software sales for them. Since they lost cash on the console itself does not mean it was a bad sell. The software sales and xbox live were a huge hit.

 | Plus, since the xbox was their entry into console gaming, they wanted to establish themselves more than to make large profits. It's part of their business plan. |

It has a superior screen, arguably better playback, more integrated features, about the same size, and it costs less.. The reason Ipod is so successful is because it's a product of one of the most successful marketing companies in the world. Apple is 100% marketing, and design to marketing.
Edit: Oh yeah, it also plays just about every format, output's video at actual SDTV resolution, and has a slightly better battery life. |

 | reply to fAcEtIOUs There's plenty of legitimate competition for the iPod. Enough to make smart shoppers think twice about getting one. However Apple is a marketing monster and have made the iPod look very, very sexy. Why the other companies haven't invested so much in marketing is anybody's guess, but iPod killers have been out for a few years now. |
