It's only a matter of time.

Apple is naive to think that no one else will come out with a good player. And when that player can get music from every music store, it will crush the ipod. Apple has set it up so the ipod and itunes are locked to each other. This of course is great while they are a monopoly, but if someone else makes a player that works with every other music store and can gain a decent market share, the ipod will topple.

Of course if you purchase the MP3 player that is the subject of the story, you are exclusively tied to Microsoft. You can not play the songs on any other computer, except one running windows. At least with Apple solution, you are not tied to a single opertaing system. Talk about vendor tie-in/lock-in.

Hmmm.... Lets see, I'm a Mac user that want's to dl music from one of those music sites you mention. Wait a minute.... they use Windows DRM....Microsoft does not let it work on anything but Windows......

Kind of what you blame Apple is doing.....

Who said Apple thinks no one else will come out with a good player? Apple is anything but complacent. The Mini to Nano transition is a perfect example of that. The Mini was selling like hotcakes and they could have just sat back and let it sell, but instead they released the Nano and knocked all the competitors back down.

You're really missing the point, aren't you. Who CARES about the music store? People buy iPods because they LOVE them. They are the first truly great digital music players that were cool, and easy to use, and reliable. So far no other company has managed to check off all three of these criteria - instead they just try to cram more SPECS in an ugly and cheaply made package and trying to sell it for less. That's all they know how to do - cram specs and drop prices. Look at Dell.

People (some anyway) buy music from iTunes store because it's convenient since they already have an iPod. NOBODY buys an iPod just because they want to buy music from the iTunes music store!

In any case, anyone who spends a lot of money on ANY digitally purchased music is a SUCKER, due to the hassles and limitations of DRM and the low quality of the sound. If you want CHEAP, steal it from P2P. If you want the best quality and flexibility, buy the stupid CD and rip it yourself. Savvy users are using a combination of options 2 and 3.

None of you get it. Obviously you are Apple fans. It doesn't matter if a windows formats works on the mac or not. The mac is an insignificant market share. The ipod is only famous because it works on windows. If it was mac only, it would have died a long time ago. You don't have to believe it, but the fact is if you don't support windows, you aren't going to make any money. Those with money buy and use windows, those without money steal windows or use linux.

I agree with freediverx it is the cultural factor that makes the ipod sell. There are already plenty of other music players that are less restrictive more convenient and cheaper, but they just aren't as sexy.

Fine we all get it. You are a Windows fan and will hate anything Apple puts out.... (Any Apple topic you post on will prove this)

Now that that's out of the way, your first point was that the moment a player comes out that will let you play song from any store it will kill the ipod. You are thing shown that Microsoft does the same thing Apple does and you change the argument to a "Apple market share is so small that the ipod is number one ONLY because of Windows"

Dude pick a point and stick with it.

Imo, Ipods are ugly and lack features, and thus I won't be buying one. My point is that there are different markets, not just one. For example, you won't see me buy an ipod anytime soon.

I still think though that Ipods are there to stay, just look at the store support/accessory support for it. It has reached "Playstation" status, and I don't see how just another player will be able to replace it. Competitors should look to fill the needs of other markets instead.

It doesn't matter what OS is on top. But the top OS is going to be where the money is. If the ipod only connected to a mac, it could have never got this big(limited by the small market share of the mac) If you deny that, your an idiot. I am no microsoft fan, I am instead a fan of what's easiest to use. And the most used OS is going to be the easiest OS to use. Not necessarily because of the ease of controlling the OS but more so because all the software and compatibility is going to be there.

You seem to think every mp3 player out there is just like Dell or the cheap Rios. I know of at least two companies that have met your criteria and even exceeded the capabilities of the comparable iPod. You gotta open your eyes to more than just Apple commercials and Dell kiosks.
