The screencaps are pretty large, so figured inline attach might suck, but i'll remember for next time. :)

Let me know if there's a glaring omission or confusion.

Before you begin, you'll need whatever textures you want to use, and the fonts as well.

1. create a new image, whatever size you wish. I picked white as the starting color but it won't matter much because it gets filled in anyway.

2. create a selection or a shape on the new image, either works. For this one I used a rounded rectangle shape, then right clicked on the layer > rasterised it.

3. now, open up the wood texture you intend to fill that with. Make sure it's a seamless texture or you will have nasty edge lines.

4. hit ctl+a to select all on the texture.

5. go to edit > define pattern. Just name it what you like. (repeat steps 3-5 for all the textures you plan to use)

6. now, make sure your area to fill is selected if not already. (ctrl-left click on the layer)

7. Go to Edit > Fill, then in the options, pick fill: pattern. Select the pattern you just created, then fill the selection. Viola! Now, you have your background...spiffy, huh?

8. Now, click the Text tool, and make your text or dingbat, I used white as the color, but again, it's going to get filled in, so not a biggie. You could also just use a new selection if you preferred, long as it's on a new layer.

9, Now, with that text layer as the active layer, click the "f" button on the bottom of the layers panel.

9a, First, select Pattern Overlay, and select the pattern you intend to fill the text with.

10. Now you'll need to continue playing with the layer styles settings to achive what you want. I'm including what I used to get this particular effect in the images posted, but you can play to your hearts content.

[att=3][att=4][att=2]

11. Should look something like this when done.

[att=6]

I've attached the .PSD used, so you can see what's happening there.

You can use this multiple times on different fonts/dingbats with as many different textures and layers as you wish to create your masterpiece!
