really

are we seriously applauding VZ for deploying DSL to a rural area? isn't this exactly what they ARE SUPPOSED to be doing with all of that USF money they collect? I don't mind paying a USF if it means that people (especially students) who dont have high speed access to the net get hooked up. however, while verizon may look better compared to other companies that arent doing this, it is still pretty sad that it would require the efforts of a powerful senator (byrd) to get VZ to do what

a)they are legally supposed to be doing
b)they ethically should be doing
c)they have been collecting USF money for decades for

i think if nothing else comes out of the national franchise laws, it should be that companies must provide equal access to all areas. frankly if they want to operate with a franchise from the federal government, they should be expected to uphold the constitution.
