The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. Since I always check here for a few days after Patch Tuesday and trust what's posted, I felt confident installing the .NET update I was offered (under optional software updates, not critical) because some of you assured me that the service that is installed and started goes away after another reboot.<br><br>Not true on here. Installation went fine (except for an entry in eventviewer saying that the IIS update piece couldn't install because I don't have IIS running---which is a good thing :)). Went to Admin Tools, Services, and saw that the service, .NET optimization, was running, as you'd warned. Rebooted and checked---still running.<br><br>So I rebooted again and checked---still running. Third time's a charm? Nope. Still running.<br><br>I am NOT a happy camper, as I trusted being told that the service stopped running after the first reboot. <br><br>Now what? How do I get rid of this without causing problems? The obvious is to set the service to manual or disable, but I have no way of knowing if that will cause problems, and this is a production machine. Irony is, we don't use .NET as far as I know (Acronis True Image might use it?), but I have it here so I do want to keep it updated. It is supposed to run once, then quit until needed again. In the Prefetch folder, it is SPUPDSVC.EXE.<br>*Edit- And in services.msc it's "Windows SP Install Updater Service." Set to Manual.<br>Just FYI.]]></description>

Was doing a spybot scan and noticed it had it in its process list. It was probably one of those things that come up after some intstalls to make sure the program or update is working correctly. Although since it's MS, and with the fallour over the WGA, I can see why one would be wary.<br><br>But it seems to of been a one time only thing, and everything is back to normal.]]></description>

I ran that which seemed to remove all instances of .NET Framework from my computer.  I then went back to windows update and reinstalled .NET Framework V.2.  After that I ran windows update again and installed the .NET Framework Security patch.  This time it installed.  Must have been something screwy with my .NET Framework V.2.
