nobdumbtechs : U-verse is in the testing stage for Wisconsin. Once the franchised/regulation stuff gets taken care of they will role the service to everyone. Ither way if they get state franchise or township franchise, they gonna role the service.

What they want is a state franchise. Where they dont have to listen to your inputs.. Any problems you have, you can't drive to your alderman and chat it out. You'll have to drive to somewhere in Madison and state your claim alone with the millions of Wisconsin residence, if there is such a person designated to listen to you. And if they have it their way, you're better off speaking to a black hole. Remember these are the same people who route your trouble calls to India. Because its 20cents/hour to answer your calls there. And you wonder why that country has a lot of hungry people, but I digress.

Anyways if AT&T claims their technology is broadcast different and therefore should be regulated differently, thats bull. The cable company, ladies and gentlemen, is far from the 80's. Cable companies can also play into this "state franchise vs village/town franchise" game. What I'm trying to say is that if AT&T gets a state franchise, the cable companies can do the same. Cable is not limited to one form of transmission. Switch digital is coming to Wisconsin, as a matter of fact, its being tested in Green Bay already. Switch Digital is the same as U-Verse, just broadcast over a different type of "CABLE". Back to the basics, cable is cable whether its RJ45, coaxi, fiber, twisted pair, what ever grade/type.. it is all same, they all can handle digital signal. Dont let those idiots at AT&T tell you its a different technology.
If AT&T wins a state franchise, subscribers are at a lost. The cable companies may and can persue the same route.

Already these huge boxes are causing a stir in communities and the towns/villages can't say a thing.... "its state regulation." These are going to be the types of problems we'll see. Any complaints will have to be taken at the state level. And good luck waiting for a solution.

The duct is still sticking out of the right-of-way all over so they've got a way to go.
--
USNG:
16TDN2870
Find your Lat-Long:
Geocoder
<TABLE WIDTH=95% align=center border=0 CELLPADDING=4">

3496 N Oakland Ave. this morning

2207 E Webster Ave.

Unxchay : I got a door-to-door salesperson yesterday offering upfront deals on a U-Verse installation. We live in Tosa, west of I-45 and south of North Ave. He said there were teams of people canvassing the area with deals, and offered me a $50 Visa gift card if I signed up on the spot. The deal included a no-questions-asked 60 day cancellation policy.

I asked about channels, and the packages offered seem reasonable. For us the 200-channel basic package compares price-wise with T/W's basic 2-99 cable service, but the kicker is the DVR box and two additional TV's connected at no charge. We don't have HD TV's, so those packages I didn't ask about.

DSL is AT&T's standard 3/1 package. I didn't ask about the 6/1 service, but I do see it's offered online for another $15 a month (I think.) I have a solid 5/512 with T/W now, and hesitate to pursue switching without some speed guarantees, which I know AT&T won't offer.

Installation is a promo price of $50 and would take 3-5 hours, but if I signed up on-the-spot they would waive the $50 charge. Our house is more than 40 years old, so I would expect they need to run additional cabling rather than use what's existing.

Dollar-wise it's about break-even with T/W, although U-Verse has more channels and potentially better signal. I didn't look at contract issues, but I assume they will want to lock me into a 1-year deal at least. Also, I don't know what cabling they would actually be running in the house, is it CAT-5?? I have two TV's downstairs and one upstairs, but I don't necessarily want some techs buzzing holes through my exterior walls (like T/W loves doing.)

SO. Should I consider their offer? I would appreciate some opinions from people more familiar with AT&T's business practices, service & support. T/W is no pillar of stellar customer service themselves, so I don't see how service could get worse. On the other hand, the presence of U-Verse will certainly spur T/W to do some upgrades and/or price shifting. I would love to see a 10/1 T/W connection like other parts of the country, and maybe a drop in their DVR prices & service.

Regards,
TOM

rexarolla : With reference to the above posting, while i don't know
the full jurisdictional boundaries of Milwaukee, I do
know some smaller communities do have U-verse node boxes
installed in their cities. I believe Shorewood and Wauwatosa
have some type of node boxes installed. My point is if there
is a conflict with the height for node boxes blocking a
drivers view, then possibly the city and ATT should then
negotiate with a differnt type of node box. I found that
Calix and Lucent/Alcutel make a lot of node boxs. Some are
more vertical then horizontal. As for addressing the idea
of height restrictions, this is a general practice in most
communities. Citizens are asked not to have high fences
or hedges on the property to restrict a drivers view if
the property is at a intersection. Thusly, a fair compro-
mise of possibly 3 feet high for fences and hedges is
considered adequate for meeting drivers line of sight
at intersections. The same practice could then be used
with ATT and the City of Milwaukee. So if there is a size
limit imposed, then go with a different type and size
node box. Its doubtful that ATT will move the boxes to
another location but my using node boxes less high seems
like a fair compromise. So if one can't build up, then
can then they could build out. :)

They will do the easiest ones first and say "See how good these look?"

For example the photo I posted to start this thread is sitting adjacent to a veterinary office, between an alley entrance and a busy street. People have complained about it a lot but there would probably be picketing if it were sitting in front of a 2-bedroom cottage with no driveway.

This area is fully developed and there are only two 'commercial' streets in the whole town. The rest of the streets have just houses from one end of town to the other, on narrow lots. It's not quite as dense as what I've seen of Franklin Park, a Chicago suburb, but it's not far off.

When it comes time to do the tough-to-site ones deep in residential territory they'll just say "Well, what else can we do?" and then put it in the four-foot section between the sidewalk and somebody's yard.

All the other utilities around here run along the back lot lines and there are underground feeds to those - for transformer primaries, phone and CATV. So the only place you see wires is midblock where they intersect cross streets.

I understand their limitations, but if they had gone with FTTH, they would have far fewer headaches - and less money, I suppose.

The problem is they do their testing someplace out on the open range where these things look like a grain of sand on a leaf of lettuce and then they try to justify the same thing here. Their motives are clear but their methods are suspect.
--
USNG:16TDN2870 Find your Lat-Long: Geocoder
