Re: WGR614 v6 newest firmware?

I've never had any connection dropping issues, save for the IRC one.

i also downgraded to .11, becuase of the port fowarding issue that .8, and the newest 2.0 firmware. If people are having drop connection issues with the .11 firmware best way to fix that issue is to disable or (uncheck) the "Connect Automatically, as Required" under WAN setup, this seemed to fix the issues with me disconnecting every 15 min or so for about 2 seconds.

For those of you that don't know where to get the v2 upgrade for the WGR614 v6 router, go here. »kbserver.netgear.com/products/wgr614v6.asp. I get furious with these companies like Netgear that bury this information 10 pages deep on their sites. This completely stopped my internet drops (FOR NOW ANYWAY).

Thank you

Thanks.. I had the newest 2.0 firmware and still had disconnecting issues with WEP/WPA! So I tried the uncheck "Connect automatically" box and so far (past hour or so) it's been stable!

For problems with AIM (iChat, Adium) and the WGR614, disable the SPI Firewall in the WAN settings.

Does this open you up to possible DOS attacks?

Does anyone else have trouble updating the firmware??

I get "Memory allocation failed. Suggest re-upgrade after reboot or revert to factory default settings." every time I try to update... i tried restarting, rebooting AND reset...

the firmware on the router is V1.0.11_1.0.7

Here is a tip I just found. There is a problem with the WGR614 and Miranda using AIM (might be a problem for other IM clients). In Miranda, change the AIM (AOL) port to something other than 5190 and it will connect (I changed it to 5191). The WGR614 seems to drop connections on that port. (I believe another option is to disable SPI but that opens up the router more).

Like others I am also having major port forwarding issues. Has any solution been found to this problem? Here is a copy of the support ticket I submitted to Netgear:

I recently upgraded the firmware on my router to the latest available firmware on your website: V2.0.13_1.0.13NA. I made the upgrade hoping to resolve some issues with packet dropping after several days of connection. I was able to set most of my settings without difficulty but I have an issue when setting my port forwards. I was able to add 12 port forwards, most of them custom services, without a problem. After that point I would add a custom service and enter the proper ports, ip address to forward to, along with a name. At this point everything would seem to work correctly but when my browser returns to my port forwarding page the new port is not shown. I thought it might not have gone through so I tried it again but now it says "Port conflict with other service." The port forward still does not show and the service I created has not been added to the pull-down list. I was able to forward 17 ports with the previous firmware without issue. This appears to be a bug in the new firmware. Please advise me as to what I need to do to get passed this issue. Thank you.

I have never been so disapointed in a piece of networking equipment. I'm off to hunt down a DD_WRT compatible linksys router...

Derek

@comcast.net

I should have been more clear...

Performance using the 1.x firmware has been pretty bad. I've always gotten a good number of dropped connections and seem to have to reboot the router every week or so. I was setting up some port forwards today and decided to check for a firmware upgrade.

I installed the latest 2.x and immediately could not connect to AIM using iChat or Adium. I got around that by disable SPI. Then I found that the router started to refuse to forward port 22 - no more SSH tunneling for me!

Back to 1.x for me...

That is my story exactly. I have a ticket open with Netgear right now.

Now, back on 1.x, I am unable to connect to the iTunes store or run Software Update on my mac.

I just upgraded my firmware to .13NA as well. Quick question - my router never rebooted after the firmware was upgraded. It uploaded, updated, and then just sat there - never rebooted, so after a short time I just restarted it myself. Software says .13 and all seems to be fine. Any cause for concern?

Update From my case submitted to Netgear Support on Port Forwarding Conflict with Other service, here is the reply i got back from Netgear, then all my ports i wanted forwarded worked

For Netgear WGR614 V6
First you have to find out what ports does the application use. Once you established what port(s) need to be forwarded, please continue with these steps:

A) Check your current IP Address and MAC address

1. First, make sure you are connected to your the router
2. Click Start, Run, type 'cmd', hit Enter, in the black box type 'ipconfig/all' and hit Enter
3. You'll see the information of your computer displayed under either 'Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection' or 'Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection' (depending on your connection to the router)
4. IP address: x.x.x.x - this is your IP address (example: 192.168.1.15)
5. Physical address: xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx - this is your MAC address (example: 00-52-CA-4E-21-32)
6. Note both of them down.

B) Access the router page

1. Start Internet Explorer, type in the IP address of your router (default: »192.168.1.1) or »www.routerlogin.com
2. Type in the username and password (default username: admin, password: password)

C) Set up address reservation

This step is needed so your computer will always get the same IP address. Using port forwarding is only possible with address reservation (or static IP addresses, but address reservation is more reliable).

On the router page...
1. Click on 'LAN IP Setup' under 'Advanced'
2. Click the 'Add' button under 'Address Reservation'
3. Select your computer from the list based on it's IP address and/or MAC address (if it's not in the list, please press 'Refresh'). The page will automatically fill the fields so you can click 'Add'. If you still don't see your computer please fill out the fields manually.

D) Set up port forwarding

Still on the router page...
1. Click on 'Port Forwarding / Port Triggering' under Advanced (on the left side).
2. Select Port Forwarding
3. Click the 'Add custom service' button.

Fill out the fields based upon the port(s) you need to be opened.

Please check this page, you can see detailed instructions here:

That would be all. You just need to logout from the router page by clicking Logout on the bottom of the left side of the page.

IMPORTANT!!!
Please also check that you don't have any firewall activated on your computer.

Hope this helps. If it didn't, please contact us again.

Once you review my response to your case you will be given the opportunity to close your case or update in order to troubleshoot further.

If this resolved your case please select YES resolved and YES to close.

If not, please select NO and update your case providing me with the information to proceed further.

If you do not wish to update at this time just close your browser window, you will be prompted again next time you log into this case. Please also be advised that your case will auto close after 10 days.

If for any reason I am unable to respond back to you within 24 hours, your case is in the main queue so any agent can review what we have done and assist you from there.

Again, I thank you for the opportunity to assist you and THANK YOU for choosing NETGEAR.

Regards,
NETGEAR SUPPORT
