My wife still uses her trusty TDMA

Remember that phone on the first "Charlie's Angels" movie? Yeah, my wife bugged the hell out of me to get her one of those. She got it under oath that she would use it until it died of natural causes (no "forgetting" it inside a pocket and putting it to wash).

Well, it's been quite a few years now and the only reason she kept cingular after it bought Suncom here in Richmond is because she talks like a cheerleader on steroids and she has the old "unlimited" plan from Suncom (I dare not put that woman on a set amount of minutes per month).

The second I see a $5 charge on her bill (I have t-mobile), she's out of there. Unlimited minutes be damned. She'll just have to learn to shut up for a few hours per day.

What he heck is cingular thinking? It's like they are trying to make themselves the AOL of the wireless world.

If your wife ever got my wife's cell number (or vice versa) we'd shut down the matrix!

I know... wishful thinking...

I'm actually eyeballing a family plan from either Verizon or T-Mobile. Minutes now seem cheaper than when she first got her phone so I think something over 2000 minutes should suffice for the both of us considering I use less than 600 per month.

Yeah, that'll happen. Dude: if she can't gab incessantly at her phone friends, she'll talk your ear off. So, you might want to consider which is better for your sanity.

I got it!!!! How about a pearl necklace that is actually one of those dog collars but with a voice sensor and a timer. Once it goes past a set amount of minutes without a significant pause....ZAP!

I'm gonna be a millionaire.

You know, I've offered my wife a pearl necklace before. She's pretty much declined that offer...

I've actually received bills where I used a total of 13,000 minutes. You must think I'm like "head cheerleader" or something.

The trick is to get her friends on Cingular as well, all "in network" calls are unlimited.

That's the main problem I am running into. I am trying to buy a new house and Cingular's coverage in the area is not so good (the phone gets 0 bars in the basement but doesn't say "No Service"). I was considering switching to Verizon, but as my girlfriend's friends are all Cingular customers, we will probably end up paying a mint for minutes.

Honestly, the only real competition Cingular even has is T-Mobile in the U.S. You really get that poor of service in Silver Spring? I always get perfect signal out that way, it sounds to me like it's more of a crappy phone (as is typical in this country). What kind of phone is it?

Noooo... Cingular works fine in Silver Spring, even in the dumpy old apartment in which I currently inhabit. The house I am looking to buy is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay out by Frederick. That's where I have the problem. As for my phone, it is a Motorola MPX-220.

As I suspected, it's the phone. Motorola's antenna's are absolute rubbish. If you can, put your SIM in someone elses phone that's better than yours. I'm sure it's not that bad.

Uh... I think your conclusion doesn't exactly match the set of circumstances I detailed

It's worth a try, I've had various Motorola's in the past, and know people with them now. I have seen it time and again where a Motorola will have no signal, and a Nokia or a Sony Ericsson will have 3 or 4 bars. I'm sure it varies a little based on model as well, but none of the ones I've seen have performed particularly well in that department.

True... I have my girlfriend's old LG phone buried somewhere. Maybe that might solve the problem.
