[XP Home] computer browser and workstation services no start

I am troubleshooting why my home network is only working one way. The other computer can "see" me but I cannot see them.

I have found that although in services.msc my local computer browser setting is set to automatic, it is off and the same with the workstation. When I try to turn them on I get the following error codes

computer browser 1086
workstation 2250

This is a fairly new HP Pavilion a1320y

I have in a different partition installed the beta 2 of Vista but rarely use it, if that may make any difference to this issue

any help appreciated

EDIT: to clarify symptoms

Please post the exact error messages. When in the event log, click the copy/paper icon under the Down arrow and paste it here.

Try running a chkdsk c: /f, since there seems to be a problem with your Rdbss.sys file.

If the error still is there after the checkdisk, then you might want to try a repair.

Still having the problem. The computer came with the OS installed so there is no XP disc, is there a way to repair besides total system recovery?

Thanks for the help

The problem may be with the mrxsmb.sys.

In the Windows\System32\drivers folder, if you right-click the mrxsmb.sys > Properties > Version

What is the "file version" of the mrxsmb.sys?

Also, did the start of the problem coincide with any change to the system such as installing new software?

If the problem started recently have you considered using System Restore?

Here is the version of mrxsmb.sys..... 5.1.2600.2902

I cannot honestly say if any recent additions are the culprit, it has been a while since I have had any reason to use my network and when I recently tried I found it would not work properly and have been troubleshooting since.

On a side note, as mentioned above, the other computer can "see" me and they can put files in my folder and I can access them. I cannot see their folder though.

Any ideas are most appreciated

Click for full size
Can you check the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanworkstation\parameters

In the right-hand window check that there is a ServiceDll value of the REG_EXPAND_SZ type and data value is %systemroot%\system32\wkssvc.dll

Are there any other errors or warnings in the Event Viewer concerning services or drivers not loading at startup?

Again, there may be a problem with the mrxsmb.sys.

If you could run a sfc /scannow it may help or a repair of XP.

If you are unable to run either consider installing the following, which may correct a corrupted mrxsmb.sys or other file related to the Workstation service:

»support.microsoft.com/kb ··· 27/en-us

I would suggest to create a System Restore Point beforehand.

Also, are you using the latest drivers for the NIC?
