The power companies...

The power companies do have some substantial broadband assets. They have right-of-ways that cable companies, for the most part, can only dream of. They have little in the way of facilities costs as they're on city land in many cases. They have a captive audience in every bill-paying customer. However, every other broadband solution either uses the RF spectrum in the way it's meant to be used, or uses shielded cabling so as to not pollute it. BPL pollutes the RF spectrum, and is alternately polluted BY it. Hence, it is a bad idea. The power companies' wires are not a broadband asset. Their poles could be.

And if BPL comes to my town, the Riverside County Amateur Radio Association/Riverside District RACES will be happy to demonstrate system ingress for them.
