Re: [new technologies] New ActionTec Router breaks Traceroute

Other than this problem which is no big deal to me, I am very happy with the Actiontec. It has better wireless coverage than my older Linksys and I have not had to reset it ever (just 2 weeks, mind you, but my old router and cable modem would rarely stay up for a week without a reset). I think of it as the MONSTER router because of it's size and the performance claims in the manual.

Update:

The Actiontec firmware v4.0.16.1.45.80.2 fixes the traceroute problem.

What Linksys did the ActionTec replace? I have a WRT54GS (2.0) running the latest HyperWRT (however, I'm using it currently as a wired-only router (no portables currently, so I have wireless turned OFF)). Is the G connectivity improved?

This is not that firmware:

»upgrade.actiontec.com/MI424WR/MI424WR.rmt

My router says
Status: OK
Internet Version: Wireless Broadband Router is up to date

But it isn't v4.0.16.1.45.80.2 -- how do I get it?

Yeah I'm having trouble forwarding ports as well. No matter what I do, port scans show it as closed. I tried a different router (though it slows my FIOS connection, so it was only for a test) and was able to forward the port fine, so I know its something with the router. I tried switching to different ports and got the same result.

Woot! Thanks sumdum See Profile!

I just upgraded. It took about 2-2.5 minutes rather than the one minute quoted in the "Click Login if this screen hasn't refreshed after a minute." They should change that to be 5 minutes, so impatient geeks don't go throw the power after literally waiting one minute.

Traceroute works!!! Hooray!

Unfortunately I'm still having a commonly reported problem with "Bad address" errors:
daemon.warn cLink: clink0: ioctl(DRV_GET_MY_NODE_INFO) failed, res=-1: Bad address.

It only happens with certain addresses; Exactly 30 seconds of delay, then a connection.

Below is my gripes with this newer software. It's mostly UI review, and since this is not an officially released firmware upgrade, hopefully they are still improving things.

I agree with whomever said the UI is better, it is improved. There is a little left over from the OLD UI, such as left-hand-side sub-menus that don't really match the new UI. They also push everything to the right, kind of annoying. It would be easy to do if they changed the menu from a table to UL + LI and used CSS to put it underneath the main menu bar.

Advanced tab is cleaned up; I didn't mind the old way, but this does seem a bit easier to find what you need.

Advanced items are now protected by a "Are you sure" question, which will probably prevent people who don't know what they are doing from screwing things up and costing VZW more in customer support; I hope the system remembers I said Yes forever, not just for this session. Ack, it doesn't -- it asks every time you click away from "Advanced" and then back again, even within the same session -- VERY annoying. Just add a checkbox "Remember this selection" so I never have to tell the router I'm advanced again. Easy, nice, simple.

Seems all my port forwarding stuff still works, so my config remained in tact through the upgrade.

Overall it's an improvement -- hey, I can traceroute again! But there are still a few remaining issues. I'm _SURE_ many or most fixes and features in this upgrade are invisible to the end user, not trying to get down on Actiontec engineers! Still better than the dlink.

Thanks for the firmware! I'm surprised how much it changed the actual look of the control panel.

i just want to say thank you very much for making this file available.

you just cured a huge headache of mine.

the idiots at verizon voicewing were completely unable to make my call waiting work properly with my actiontec mi424wr fios router.

they tried everything they knew how to do and couldn't fix it.

the trouble ticket remained open until i fixed it myself by updating the firmware then port forwarding the voicewing protocol selection over to my phone adapters ip address.

poof walla.....everything is working now!

btw.....verizon customer service and their automated menu sucks beyond all possible comprehension.

hey all..
I updated to the 80.2 version, but ran into a problem at the login screen (which now looks different). My user name password does not work now, and neither does the 'default' username/password listed in the manual..

anyone have an idea whats going on with it?

thanks..
