Sandwich Isles Communications Boondoggle
A few days ago two telecom blogs (here and here),blogged about this 2005 article written by Andrew Walden of the Hawaii Free Press. Andrew Walden's article delved into the boondoggle project being built by Sandwich Isles Communications. SIC's massive fiber-optic project will wire all Hawaiian Homelands for telephone and Internet service. The unfair part is only people living on DHHL lands will be able to use this network. As SIC is not allowed to service non-DHHL areas It is being financed by USDA RUS loans, which will be re-paid by the Universal Service Fund.

That all being said, I still question if this project is really needed ? I don't see them making money with this frankly. It will probably require constant government subsidies for the foreseeable future. Also I'm troubled by the fact that apparently DHHL lands will get fiber-optic (connections) to the home (FTTH) and non-DHHL areas won't.If that can't be worse, some of the links below especially the Hawaii Business and the Forbes articles implied that SIC will service non-DHHL areas also with this network. Thus going head to head with Hawaiian Telcom, Pacific LightNet, and Time Warner Telcom (Oceanic Communications).
