[Home Network] Need help with WGR614 v6 Netger Router and SBC DS

Hey guys. I've done a bunch of searching and I can't figure this one out. I'm helping my friend set up her router with her sbc service. She used to have a Linksys router and I was having a similar problem. I thought it was the router so I bought her this one, which is the one I use with my comcast cable. (I'm switching over to SBC DSL soon, so I hope I can figure this out.)

Here's the problem. I set the router (Netgear WGR614)and the modem up (Speedstream 4100). It looked to be working fine, however, sometimes the internet stops working. Usually I can still see the network, but there is no internet access. I plug my computer into the router and it still doesn't work. I unplug and restart the modem, the router, and my computer like a monkey pulling wires until it works again.

I hate when something only works sometimes. I'ts much harder to troubleshoot. It's like when you bring your car in because your breaks don't work on occasion, however every time you bring it in, they work fine. So, I guess what I need is for someone to tell me exactly how I should be configuring the router and the modem and her computer to make this work the best. The only thing I've left out is that her computer is a laptop and she brings it to work and connects on that wireless signal too. So, I guess that only means that I can't configue the laptop to only work with this router. I'm not sure if that makes any difference, but I thought I wouldn't leave out any details.

Can anyone help me?

Thanks,
Kyle

Re: [Home Network] Need help with WGR614 v6 Netger Router and SB

When your connection drops, does your DSL light blink green then red? If it does it means you lost sync.

Most likley this is the problem, since I'm going through the same problem. It's smart to have a tech come and check your line, since it's VERY difficult to pin-point the problem.

You might want to try the posted solutions I found. I know I had to do the first solution for a friend of mine who had the Speedstream modem and the WGR614v5 router.

If you don't lose synch, but you lose Internet access, it could be a problem between the SS4100 and the router. The methods which work seem to be:

Method A:
SS4100 set to "PPP is on the modem, use private IP address", and "Always attempt to connect".

Router set to "Obtain IP address from ISP", or some variation of that.

Method B:
SS4100 set to "PPP is on the modem, use private IP address", and "Always attempt to connect".

Router is set to a static IP address, and configured with 192.168.1.64 on the WAN port. In most cases, you also have to configure the DSN servers; 68.94.156.1 and 8.94.157.1 should work.

Method C:
SS4100 is set to "PPP is on the computer".

Router is set to "PPPoE", and the account log in parameters are entered in the appropriate fields. User name is the full email address.

This is a bit of esoteric knowledge, and probably won't apply in most cases; but I found that configuring RIP-1 on my Netgear routers is problematic with the first two methods. Only Method C worked with RIP-1 enabled. If you don't know what RIP is all about, just make sure that it is disabled, if it is an option. Normally, it is disabled for a factory default installation. It is only useful for exchanging routing tables between to routers.

How did you determine the 192.168.1.64 address? ('Sorry, I'm new to networking and I'm just trying to understand .. I have the exact situation as keliason) Thanks.

It is the only IP address in the range of the SS4100 which passes unsolicited packets to the connected device; i.e., it is the modem DMZ IP address. You can use any IP address from 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.255.254, as long as the address you use doesn't conflict with the LAN IP address range. However, P2P, and other types of applications which expect to receive unsolicited packets WILL NOT WORK properly.

You can find the SS4100 DHCP table on this page:

»192.168.0.1/techreadout.htm

These are the lines from my SS4100:

119 LAN DHCP Server Enabled true
120 DHCP Subnet Mask 255.255.0.0
121 DHCP Start IP Address 192.168.1.64
122 DHCP End IP Address 192.168.1.64
123 DHCP Default Gateway 192.168.0.1
124 DHCP Default Lease Time 000 days 00:10:00
125 Domain name
126 DHCP Leases Allocated 1
127 DHCP Leases Available 0
The other point to remember is that your LAN IP address must not overlap the modem IP address. That means that if your router default LAN IP address is 192.168.0.0/255.255.255.0, you need to change it. Because looping back to 192.168.1.64 can be useful, your router LAN IP address should be 192.168.>1.0/255.255.255.0.

EDIT: Needed to add the reference to the "DMZ", else the statement would be incorrect.

I'm still having tremendous problems. I've tried all 3 solutions that Norman gave me, but they all do the same thing. It looks like it works for a second, but then I get no internet. All the proper lights on the modem and router look good, but I get nothing... Please help!

There are too many variables at this point. Take the router out of the equation and hook directly to the 4100 and run for a bit and see what happens to your connection. Then check that everything that hooks into the DSL number's circuit is filtered properly.

best solution is to replug and unplug, because it seems to me that its your connection problem

i would get a 2wire modem and that way it acts both as a gateway, router, and modem. ITS great and eliminated the haseel of getting modem + router and then synicing them. another thing to keep in mind is that netgear isnt very user friendly they have been known to have troubles with sbc. my friend has the same thing u have and everytime he gets called he loses connection.

if i were you i would stick to COMCAST!!!! sbc isnt very reliable, although its cheap, just theathen comcast to cancel and they'll probalby give u 25% off

i had sbc, but switched to my adelphia because sbc has horrible tech support and my lines lost sync a crap load of times

hope that helps

the computer works fine when plugged into the modem. but i have a wireless router and my roommates need that.

it's a shame too, because I am troubleshooting this for a friend.. and I happen to have the same router and I'm switching to dsl myself.. i have the same problem also now.. i don't know if sbc will let me out of my contract.. i really wish I could just figure out a solution..

Configuring the SS4100.

Configuring the FVS114.
Method A. The screen shots are for the equipment configuration. SpeedStream 4100 and Netgear FVS114.

There is no way to configure the IP addresses on the modem.

I have my router set for 192.168.102.1/255.255.255.0 on the LAN. Nothing special on the WAN, other than that I don't let the router handle the PPPoE session as long as that is handled on the modem.

You lose the Internet, with all lights normal? I'd try another router.

If it works fine with the modem then clearly it's not an SBC/AT&T problem. What's not clear to me is exactly how long things "work" when the router is connected. At first you say "sometimes the internet stops working", which would indicate to me that it works most of the time. But then you said, after trying Norman's instructions, that it "works for a second". In the first situation I'd probably look for a bad router, but in the second I'd tend to think it was a bad configuration.
