This kinda sucks since I still use Exp Basic on a couple of outlets with SD TiVo's for kids shows, etc. Any info on whether there will be any options to enable the expanded basic channels cheaply?

In other words, would they provide cheap ($3/mo) or free boxes. They could even make these channels ClearQAM so they can deply cheap no-CableCARD tuners.

This is the first I have heard of MPEG4 for cable networks. Any idea what this means to TiVo users?

I believe the S3/THD hardware supports MPEG4 but I assume an update will be needed to enable MPEG4 decode on these units.

arlington was delayed but is now scheduled to be complete by the 28th of august.

all the time DirecTV/TurboHD is offering 4 free months if I switch to them, and they have over 100 HD channels..makes me sick... just about to switch over... I just *WISH* I had FIOS in arlington. Stupid ass U-verse.

I would consider staying with TW or switching to satellite depending on the quality. (No Verizon FIOS because the City of Richardson just LOVES Southwestern Bell. *smooch* :P )

I don't know if it's simple coincidence, dumb luck that something broke at the wrong time, or actually directly related, but my HD signal quality has gone down since last week with plenty of pixellation and dropouts.

Maybe, just maybe, TWC had to shoehorn these channels in, are expecting some loss of quality, and made the decision to pull these channels to restore service to an acceptable level.

That's probably just coincidental--three of the four temporary HD channels were added to a previously unused QAM.

One was added to the QAM shared with History and Golf/Versus, so theoretically they might have decreased the bit rate on those two to make room for the third.

Live by myself and only have one HD TV so really no need for more than one DVR. AT&T has added more functionality and features in the year Uverse has been in DFW than the past 3 years since I've had with TWC. You'll want to cancel it. U-Verse only allows 1 HD stream to the house. That means you can't DVR an HD program and watch another one.

We have 3 DVR's all on HDTV's. We can record or watch 6 HD streams simultaneously. U-Verse is ages away from being able to do that... not to mention their bitrates.

This was a pleasant surprise, I was just reading that NBC was adding extra channels to present extra coverage of the Olympics, but I assumed I wouldn't see them.

Edit--My excitement has been tempered--I just read that all those channels are only temporary and will be removed August 24? I can see removing the specialized channels 788 and 789, but why take away USA HD and CNBC HD?

What channels? I haven't checked every one, but the HD channel names usually end in "D".

Phil75070 : When you set up a series recording scroll down to where it says "View all settings" and select that. One of the options on the next page is to "Record programs on: This channel only". Then go to the bottom of the page and select "Record series with these settings".

I asked the CSR this on Sunday when I called to check on why I'm not receiving them. She initially did not say when they are supposed to be added. After re-asking multiple times and expressing my strong displeasure at essentially being lied to about them when I signed up, she eventually gave a "maybe next month" response. My gut tells me her response was intended more to get me to stop asking than it was based on any real information.

I ordered digital cable on Friday and received it late yesterday afternoon. I had other things to do so much of my testing and playing had to wait for today. Unfortunately, I've run into a couple of big disappointments.

First, does anyone know when the new HD channels will be available in Garland/75042? When I ordered on Friday, I specifically asked if the new channels were enabled at my location and the TW representative said yes. I knew the new channels were already on the wire (Discovery HD was unencrypted for a short while a few weeks back and A&E HD has been unencrypted for a couple weeks) but I wanted to make sure they really were enabled on the STBs. Low and behold they aren't available on my STB. The representative I spoke with today confirmed it and couldn't offer any better answer about when they would be enabled except "maybe next month".

Second, I requested a non-DVR STB with firewire since I intend to use it with a Hauppauge HD-PVR and PC-based DVR. They brought me a Motorola 6200 STB. I haven't tested the firewire port yet but according to the menus it apears to be enabled. That's good. What's not good is it appears the 6200 requires me to choose either 1080i or 720p as the only output format for HD content. My preference is for the STB to pass through the content in the received resolution. Are local FM stations still available on TWC? I don't want to go to all the trouble of splitting off of my tv, hooking it up, etc. just to find it isn't. And if so, does it include a vast majority of the local stations?

How's that for a question out of left field! My little loop antenna doesn't do so well where I live.

Oh ok. Wow thats not gonna make many people want to keep just basic analog cable. Thats only really gonna leave local affiliates with the exception of wgn and cspan I wish they'd just get rid of the whole analog side like they are in some other places. I am guessing once those are dropped is when we can expect more HD since that will free up a lot of bandwith.

Today I cannot get any digital channels at all, just "one moment please, this channel should be available shortly", and very poor picture quality on analog channels. HSI seems unaffected so far. anon : The grass isn't always greener on the other side of the street.

A week ago, I had U-***** installed. The HD content was a little better and had some nice bells and whistles.

Since the installer cut my coax and I'm having two additional stb's installed, I have to wait a couple of days to get reconnected.

Before jumping ship consider this:

1. Most TV and universal remotes don't have codes for their moto boxes
2. Their remotes wouldn't switch sources (tv/video) like my TWC remotes do on my equipment.
3. Music stations aren't as good
4. HD picture quality seems to suffer from excess compression (clayface etc.) more than TWC.
5. (most important) the spouse hated the complexity of the interface, multiple remotes, etc.

So for the marginal improvement in content, the "cost" of moving to a more complex/complicated user environment just wasn't worth it to me.

If TWC can ramp up the content and provide a "whole house" DVR (like the csr hinted at), they may be able to stop the customer base erosion. If they can make the HD experience second to none, they'll have the winner.

Just my 2 cents.

Well that would be good except all the digital channels now have artifacts. Im seeing them on all my cable boxes and my TV with a TVCard in it. I get the message "One Moment Please - This channel should be available shortly". The call center wants to schedule a technician to come out in two weeks and apparently has no way of seeing if this is an issue with the station versus my set up. I have cycled power on both boxes and they sent a reset.

Unbelievable that they are continuing to state that there is not way for them to know anything about whether they are experiencing problems with History HD.

You've probably learned to take advantage of the features of the software by now to more easily do what you want. Except for the colorful background and the ability to recommend shows, I don't see much functional difference between the TWC software and the software on our Tivo. I do like the skip back and skip ahead on the 6416 better than the fast forward/fast rewind on the Tivo. (Those skip buttons on the 6416 are automatically setup on my Harmony remote.)

To get a "season pass", go to Menu and then the magnifying glass/search icon. Search for your title, if necessary look at alternate times and channels, select your show, select whether you want new shows only, whether you want to allow a safety margin at the beginning and end of each show, and confirm your choices.

I also feel your pain on the other stuff, but you can easily search for shows by pressing "Guide" twice and selecting the little magnifying glass icon. From there you can search by title, etc.

Be sure you are using the PageUp/PageDn buttons when cruising through the guide - it avoids running across the banner ad repeatedly.

anon : One thing to note about U-Verse, is it only allows one HD stream to the house at a time. Right now, we have 3 DVR's with Time Warner which means we can record 6 simultaneous HD programs at once. With U-Verse, we could only record OR watch one at a time.

U-Verse is a total of 4 streams to the house at any one time.

Timothy28 : I can't speak for U-verse cause i've never had it but i can answer the other question. No it does not mean that. That is for strictly over the air broadcasts not cable. You can hook coax right into the tv and get reception. You won't get too many channels though since most are on digital. When time warner decides to go all digital and drop analog then you will need a digital to analog converter. I'm assuming they will supply them to those who need them when that time comes.

With the new digital move, does that mean that you will no longer be able to get cable programming without a digital box? Or will you still be able to use tv tuner and hook it up directly to coax?

I've noticed this during my daily viewing of Comedy Central (ch. 262) and have noticed this during MSNBC as well (ch. 223). Break-ups occur sporadically. I tried watching Comedy Central on analog (ch. 64), and I notice hiccups there as well.

I have not notice any problem watching HD programming.

Is there anything I can do with the Motorola DCT6412 III to do any initial self-diagnosis? Thanks for any advice.

anon : So now I am getting really upset.... does anybody know what the hold up for HD channels in Frisco is? I did a channel search back on April 2nd and found Discovery HD which was quickly removed in a couple of days so the bandwidth and channels are there. I plan on giving a call tomorrow but wasnt sure if anybody had any insider information.

Timothy28 : Those commercials drive me nuts too and versus just has to inform you several times during the game its available in HD. I hope they can finish the upgrades to get us versus in time for the next hockey season.

In my part of Irving 75061 we don't have the new HD channels yet. The main thing that bothers me is that TW is running ads for the new HD channels when they are only available in a few towns. It just sucks watching the stars game on Versus and then seeing an ad that says "watch the game now in HD on channel 786" when most of DFW still is without it.

Well bad news. That's about when you will see them. Arlington is going thou 2 different upgrades right now. Both must be done in all of Arlington before the new channels can be seen. I know some small areas of Arlington are upgraded now but will have to wait until the rest of the city catches up with it. Right now there is only one set of equipment that feeds Arlington and Grad Prairie, once the 2 cites are upgraded to the 860 mhz plant then you will start to see the new channels. Arlington and G.P. are considered one zone, so when you make a channel change it will affect both cites.

Timothy28 : I'm not sure if the simulcasting takes up more bandwith that could be used for more HD. I feel you on the stars game though. I wish all the games were on my27 and not some fox sports south west. Since getting HD i never wanna watch anything in SD now especially sports.

anon : So basically this reduces their video bandwidth on their interhub fiber ring. But does this actually do anything for the end user? By this I mean the bottleneck currently limiting us from getting new HD programming is locally in our area (I am assuming this since Plano got the new channels and us in Frisco didnt) or am i wrong? I am doing everything I can to be a good soldier and give TW the benefit of the doubt especially after receiving some free batteries from them :D but has anyone heard any word regarding our new channels. Tomorrow is game 4 of our DALLAS STARS (GO STARS!!!!) and I wont get in HD :(
