OK fine - I go and look at these three additions, and all of the channels are black. There's nothing there. On top of that, the TiVo guide info for 786 & 789 is "Sign Off" all the time - there's no other info there.

Previously I was getting 790 MGMHD on the old MOJO channel, but that channel is now black too. The channel designation on 790 for TiVo now is ???? - I have never seen questions marks as a channel designation in the eight years I've had a TiVo. :) A further thought occurs about MGMHD. Given it's channel designation of 797, it's grouped with the two HDNET channels which are behind an HD pay scale. Shall I assume that I can't get 797 because of the fact that I don't subscribe to the pay HD? That would make sense, but it would be nice to know that for sure.

On top of all this, I looked in the channels I receive section of my TiVo config, and noticed that 770 TNTHD was selected, so I checked it out, and I *DO* have this channel. This is new, I have not seen this channel before tonight. Also odd that I never got a channel add notice from TiVo on that one.

I decided to check the rest of the HD channels that TiVo knows about, but I don't get here in Garland. None of them were active, either. Those are:

740 CNNHD
744 TBSHD
745 HSTRYHD
752 FOODHD
753 HGTVD
754 AETVHD
756 DSCHD

OK, to summarize, I got a notification that three channels were added to my cable lineup. All three are black, I do not have them. I did get one new channel add, but I only noticed it because I manually went and looked.

I had the same problem with a 6200, which turned out to be a handshake issue. I would catch occasionally if I turned on the TV first that I would see the image for a second or two, followed by a copyright violation warning, and then the video turned off (audio still worked). Try turning off DVR then click on "menu" button on the remote within 2-3 seconds to bring out format setting, change the setting on "HDMI/Ypbpr" and see that works. (you might want to do that in component input first then switch to hdmi to test the new format).

HDMI handshake, you display might not be able to sync correctly with DVR. Did you see a flash, then the signal drops after connecting?

While the HDMI cable is plugged in, unplug both the TV and the DVR from the power, and reconnect. It means there are digital versions of analog channels on the digital side. Here's a brief description. On cable television systems, analog-digital simulcasting (ADS) means that analog channels are duplicated as digital subchannels. Digital tuners are programmed to use the digital subchannel instead of the analog. This allows for smaller, cheaper cable boxes by eliminating the analog tuner and some analog circuitry. On DVRs, it eliminates the need for an MPEG encoder to convert the analog signal to digital for recording. The primary advantage is the elimination of interference, and as analog channels are dropped, the ability to put 10 or more SDTV (or two HDTV, or various other combinations) channels in its place. I live in an apartment complex in Lewisville; Time Warner's online ordering system claims that my complex is served but it offers analog cable as the only choice. There's no cable Internet or digital cable offerings shown. By contrast, the other two complexes on the same street both show digital cable, phone, Internet and so on.

I live in an apartment complex in Lewisville; Time Warner's online ordering system claims that my complex is served but it offers analog cable as the only choice. There's no cable Internet or digital cable offerings shown. By contrast, the other two complexes on the same street both show digital cable, phone, Internet and so on.

What gives? Is it a database error, or is there a real possibility that TW only offers analog cable here? (If so, I wonder what will happen if/when TW goes primarily digital; locals and public access only?)

I thought I'd ask here first before calling TW, just in case this is a common occurrence..

chamberc, you may want to check DirecTV HD PQ again. Not sure where your "terrible HD PQ" information is from. I switched from TWC to DTV in march of this year, also becuase I was fed up with TWC's lack of HD channels. The DTV HD PQ is at least as good as TWC, and for many channels even better. The reason, I believe, is that they now send mpeg4. I have many more HD channels, better PQ, and better service. Check out some of the DTV chat on the avs forum and dbstalk for other peoples views.

Here is what I do know - I didn't have FSN-HD for any part of the Rangers season (can the comments, guys), and that I also failed to enjoy the American League Championship Series and Division Series on TBS-HD, because I don't have it. Many other Time-Warner areas have those two, but, I don't. Many other areas also have many other HD channels.

If this sounds like someone who may be ready to change providers, well, I suppose it might. I called TW last week and asked about Garland. The rep I talked to seemed conscientious but he could have been blowing smoke. There was a problem with the Garland controller when they sent the fix out to the market. That's what they tell me any way. They just reset the fix to all of Garland.

I did have another question. Given Garland is mostly behind with adding the batch of HD channels that everyone else in DFW has been getting, I'm wondering about Jan 1, 2009.

That's the date that the MLB Network goes online. When I switched to TWC from DirecTV, I researched this channel first, because I want this channel badly. I wouldn't have switched if I didn't see that TWC was going to carry it. However, I now wonder if I'll actually get MLB Network on 1/1/09.

I've never understood why the guide data isn't cached on the harddrive. Not at this time. We are hopping with the next software upgrade that some of it will clear up. There is not a date set as of yet when the new software will be pushed out.
This seems unlikely to me seeing as how the box has undergone 3 HARDWARE upgrades and innumerable software and firmware upgrades with no change at all.

I recommend resigning yourself to it - you'll have a happier life (or get TiVo).

That's normal behavior for all Moto Boxes, and the other good one will behave the same way sooner or later. Unplug the power cord seems to help.
