More good stuff.

Re: the aerial view of Irvine...I was travelling through that area a couple of times a month back in '76 and remember how many ground squirrels were in those fields now covered by industrial buildings. There was also a sugar mill that would have been off to the right in the picture.

I was at Tustin and 17th yesterday. What a difference.

Keep working those archives brother.

Oh yeah, what's the answer to the squiggly line question?

It meant "STOP AHEAD". I don't remember seeing that anywhere else in this state. My first introduction to it was in Capo Beach in 1960, where Palisades Drive dropped down onto PCH.
It very well could have been an ORCO thing.

Looking west, intersection of Live Oak Canyon Rd, El Toro Rd, and Santiago Cyn Rd, 1966. Cook's Corner is on the right.

No_Strings See Profile, could you get a current view of that and post it here one of these days?
Ask, and ye shall receive usually a smart ass reply

The driveway on the right is for St. Michael's Abbey. There is still a lot of beautiful, undeveloped land in the area ... for now.

That's a northern view from ETR. I demand a western view from Live Oak Cyn Rd.

OK, take 2.

A shot from Live Oak, looking West and featuring an annoyingly red car. Portola Hills has replaced what used to just be a hill.

So are you saying the foothills leading into the Western slopes of the Northern Sierra Nevadas are covered with OC style McMansions and neighborhoods dominated by the tyranny of the HOA?

I think red is a great color for a Passat. Or is that one of those new Hyundai's?

what the hell is a badge kit, and @RFC: if you head east from sacramento (which is admittedly further north than i was thinking), then yes.

Badge kit - those small decorations manufacturers stick on the sheet metal in an effort to distinguish an otherwise nondescript vehicle. Glue a couple of S4 and V8 badges on a Passat and voila, you have a $60k VW.

Pic 1 is atop the northern ridge of the old Forster Canyon County Dump in San Juan, looking NW over the town. The freeway overcrossing is the one over San Juan Creek. I can't remember if that old water tank is still there, but it was for years and years after this was snapped in June of 1960.

Pic 2 is looking at the NW corner of Orangethorpe and Brookhurst in Fullerton. Notice the Shopping Bag supermarket (bought out by Vons) and the classic fifties Chevron Standard filling station. 1961.

Primary grading starts. Goodbye Chavez Ravine.
Change. And the Dodgers. All those longtime families uprooted so the big fat gabacho from the East could erect his ballpark.

North Anaheim, 1947
From the archive's description:

Aerial view of the north Anaheim industrial area, located north of La Palma Avenue; image shows several industrial buildings, including U.S. Industrial Chemicals Inc. at center, with Essex Wire Corp. in the old Anaheim Sugar Co. building (with tall white smoke-stack) at center, with Patt Street running along side, then General Electric Co. (sythethic resin manufacturer) and Southern California Citrus Foods (citrus products) divided by Olive Street in far right background; Bridgeford Co. (meat packers) left of center, background on Commercial Street at Patt Street; at the southwest corner of Commercial and Lemon Streets at far left, center is Rinshed-Mason Co. (paint manufacturer); also visible is La Palma Park in the foreground, at the junctures of La Palma, Lemon and Anaheim Blvd. (formerly Los Angeles Street) and orange groves in far left and top background.

It says "out Temple from courthouse", so the view is to the NW
from the SE part of Broadway and Temple. The street on the right is where the Santa Ana Freeway is now, and another 3000' or so up that will be the 4 level interchange.

I pulled this one because of the historical significance of the date and the people involved.

The caption read: "The San Lorenzo Nursery Company building in Los Angeles. The company is Japanese-owned."

The date: 11-23-41

Tic, tic, tic.....

"Los Angeles, Calif.--A store for rent in Little Tokyo after residents of Japanese ancestry were instructed to evacuate. This area is near the Civic Center in Los Angeles. Evacuees will be assigned to War Relocation Authority centers for the duration..."

I love the use of "evacuate".
