Re: 1 in 17 does not work? said by riturno: What if light bulbs didn't fit into 1 in 17 sockets?
This mention of bulbs reminded me a situation back in the 80's in the Boston area. In a number of low-income housing projects, they had bare-bulb fixtures in all the public hallways. However, they were proprietary; the bulbs looked like ordinary Sylvania 60W's, at first glance, but the screwbase was a fraction of an inch wider in diameter. Hence, they wouldn't fit in household sockets (only the matching fixtures). Remembering that this was low-income housing, there was only one theory I could come up with as to why: They didn't want residents stealing bulbs out of the hallways when they needed them for their apartments.
However, the, "if there's a will there's a way" scenario prevails. After all the fixtures were replaced with fluorescent's, we found a whole case of these bulbs (brand new!) in a dumpster near the projects. It was discovered that we could use these with those old-fashioned socket adapters used to add two outlets. The specific type were those that were of two plastic halves riveted together (leaving a tiny gap down both sides), with the screw threads molded into the plastic. These would expand just enough to allow us to screw in those funky bulbs. |
