MrTudo : Thanks openbox,

We spent a lot of money going back and forth to western north carolina looking to relocate. Between the poor high speed cable availability there ( and what was available was almost laughable) along with other issues we decided to stop looking there.

So we started looking in areas that had Comcast as we've had great experiences with this company and that led us to a place called Peachtree City/Fayetteville Georgia. We're still undecided about that but will make a decision this week.

Someone suggested looking up in the panhandle so I did, at least on the internet and stumbled across Gulf Breeze, Milton and Navarre as being places in our price range ( under 300K ). Next step was cenus.gov and then look at the viability of internet. So here I am.

One of the great parts of Fla is the lack of state income taxes which in our case would amount to more than 10K a year that a state like Georgia would extort from us just for the "pleasure' of living there. Florida doesn't have that and so we'd like to stay in Fla but it's just gotten unreasonable in terms of what you get for your money in South Fla. Hence the adventure in looking elsewhere. 10 G's a year is a lot of money and I'd personally rather burn it than give it up like that.

Some questions about where you live. Didn't that area become a major spring break place after we ran the breakers out of Lauderdale??

Do you know anything about Milton and it's internet availability?

By the way, we live in Port Charlotte and were in the walk in closet of the master bedroom when Charley came rolling thru, cat 4, 145mph winds gusting to over 180 and the eye was right in the neighborhood. Soon as we had electric we had internet with Comcast. That was pretty awesome.

Some questions are wildly off topic and I apologize to the mods and readers. It may seem strange to some how we are almost basing our moving criteria around the internet but it's how we make our living, so it's right up there in importance.

Thank you!
Tom

crucify : What you mentioned is the real issue, the lack of comp. causes these strangle holds for these cable companies.
Sure I could move and get better service but I do not care to live in a city.
openbox9 : I can't compare Mediacom's service to Comcast's service, but I will give you my opinion. I can compare Mediacom to Cox Communications (which you could have if you moved a little further west), which was stellar imo (at least in the Omaha area). I've had Mediacom service in the Gulf Breeze (Navarre) area for about a year now and had numerous problems throughout the year. The initial difficulties were most likely due to the hurricanes that rolled through last year. However, I've had several intermittent outages since that time with little or no explanation from customer service. The outages encompass everything from phone to Internet to the DTV with VOD. I only have phone because my wife "insists" that we have a home phone in addition to two cell phones. And the DTV and VOD will be going away in another month when our 12 month intro pricing expires.

Customer service is mediocre at best, imo. I'd estimate that about 80% of the customer service reps that I've spoken (I've probably averaged about one call/month) to don't know how and/or don't care to troubleshoot customer issues. Mediacom is quick to roll a truck for every single little thing. My guess is that if a tech doesn't want to, or doesn't know how to help, their escalation mechanism is to roll a truck to "pass the problem" and move on to the next customer.

Management-wise, Mediacom appears to lack real direction and vision. Mediacom has flip-flopped so many time regarding their "Max" service that I've lost count. Additionally, the lack of dissemination of information within the Mediacom organization is severely lacking from my perspective. I'm amazed how the company can release new products and several months after the release, several customer service reps are ignorant of procedures or requirements. There appears to be no top-down push of information.

Service-wise, when things work, they generally work as advertised. Unfortunately, the service hasn't worked too many times for my liking, especially considering how much money I would be paying for service if I wasn't in the 12-month intro window. I think Mediacom is behind the times as far as their service offerings, but I realize there's no real incentive for them to upgrade or expand because they have no real competition in a lot of their service areas. Even in our area, our choice is BS for internet which is overpriced and under-serviced imo.

Welcome to the area. I don't know if I've really answered your question, so feel free to ask again if need be.
