aj004 join:2006-05-28 Forest Hills, NY | DSL has increased in NYC to 8MBPS/1MBPS and is a cheaper price than Time Warner Cable for internet and phone thru a competitor.
For those in range (5k or less) to the Central Office, this product is much better than Time Warner Cable's offering especially if you have phone service (VoIP or Time Warner Cable's own service). If you don't have phone service, its still CHEAPER than Roadrunner Premium with free unlimited calling.
The problem is that its limited by distance to the CO and so it cant have much of a competitive impact since Cablemodem has no distance limitations. So for those lucky enough to get it, this product fills a very important niche. |

aj004 join:2006-05-28 Forest Hills, NY 3 edits | The competitor with 8Mbps/1Mbps was NOT Verizon but is available OVER Verizon phone lines so it has no capacity issues whatsoever. It was just upgraded so there are plenty of empty line cards available.
Verizon DSL is irrelevant if you live close to the CO because it is too slow and too expensive on the DSL speed tier that is slower than the competitor who is MUCH cheaper.
In the building where I live I can get 8MBPS/1MBPS DSL, Time Warner Cable which is 8000/512k for Premium, or RCN 20MBPS/2MBPS (highest speed tier offerings between carriers). If the building did NOT have RCN, the competitors DSL offering would have been the best offering since it is CHEAPER than Roadrunner Premium for a FASTER speed with unlimited calling to boot. The competitor was Earthlink FYI.
This provides an additional choice for people stuck with Time Warner Cable to a segment of users who are in range to the central office (5k or less).
Looking at a quick google map of the search area from my central office in a dense section of Queens, that 5000 feet distance from the CO covers the area quite nicely although there are a few places where the range will be out of distance. The loops in my building are around 4000 feet. |

aj004 join:2006-05-28 Forest Hills, NY | Seems like TWC upgraded to 10MBPS thereby knocking out Earthlink/Covad..............
Wonder if Earthlink/Covad plans on boosting speed in the future. |

That was a pretty quick exit for them then lol...even though Im still wondering why we got 2 upgrades within three months..thats a first out of them, not that im complaining, but whats the reasoning behind it...and as usual, its not "official" yet, im guessing they will announce this during the holiday season
*note* definitely not complaining:
