milbrath : I got an unfinished estimate today, it was not pretty! $3450 per month for 6mb. With a 2000 install fee and 48month contract. They claimed quite a bit of it was due to the 4 class C's I wanted(wonder if they charged it at the same rate they charge residential customers for more static IP's). AT&T does not charge for those, nor does bellsouth. They are going to send me a new quote early next week with a 5 year contract and just one IP.
//OT rant
I swear the telco's should be required by law to charge their own ISP divisions what it cost the competition on a regional basis, that would even the playing field a bit as DSL prices would jump in an area like this, provided the telco's were required by law that their ISP division be profitable & not subsidized. Another thing that ticks me off about the telco's is the phone book. It costs several hundred dollars to get a decent yellowpage & whitelisting advert. Yet the local phone company has advertisements all over the place, who do you think paid for that? They didn't the advertisers did. I guess it's their book and can do whatever they want. We just took the whitelisting this time around. I think it still cost a hundred per year for that. Enough of my rant on the telco's.

Anyways what brought on the rant.

I think charter is also pricing according to region, as the first thing they asked me was what a T1 costs me. I never answered that as it was none of their buisness. Though since we are in a small area serviced by frontier and surrounded by bellsouth they knew it was quite high and priced accordingly I realize fiber costs a hell of a lot to build out but 1 block costing
$130000 over the 4 year contract, I think not.

I informed them that I could get service much cheaper now that we are moving into that neck of the woods and had a nearby tower pre-approved by bellsouth for upto 9 T1's and that if I did not receive a better quote by thursday bellsouth would be getting our buisness.

Hopefully the bellsouth & AT&t merger will take place so that we can merge our existing T1's in the frontier area with the new T1's at the new POP and keep our network layout the same & avoid buying out the remainder of the AT&T contract & avoid re-mapping all those darned staic IP's and dealing with the customers who can't figure out how to restart their router so it gets a new IP.This is something I was willing to do if charter could give me a better price. Still the $575 per T1 in the bellsouth area is still too high. Hell who knows charter may yet suprise me.

In the meantime Anyone know how I can obtain rights to my very own IP addresses?
milbrath : We recently learned that a local cable company(charter) is selling fiber services in our area. They have all the basics covered SLA, guaranteed bandwidth, monitoring.... and the pricing is good $125 per MB + build out cost versus a whopping $1250 per T1 that we pay now(sucks being 110 miles from the POP). I'll have to backhaul it from another nearby city but that also gets me a new POP at the same time. I know several people on here use DSL for their trunk, anyone using a cable provider and if so are you satisfied.
