DNS depends on a clearly specified standard set of requests and responses. When a zone or record does not exist, there is a proscribed response that is suppose to be given (NXDOMAIN, etc.). Whole slews of applications depend on these rules and specs being followed.
Beyond what the inconvenience that Claco pointed out give a valid reason as to why it is "broke". See above. It breaks DNS, whether you know/admin it or not. Trust me, this comes from someone has the professional pleasure of dealing with DNS daily.
