Hopefully, all current Earthlink customers -- and those just thinking about subscribing -- will post a comment in their blog about the negative impact of what they're doing. I just did. »blogs.earthlink.net/2006/08/hand···ns_1.php

Laura (Earthlink subscriber for 9 years) I've posted mine in the blog comments and I agree everyone else should too. And I've been a customer one way or another since 1993. 2006 looks to be the end date if this keeps up. -- Toolmaster of La Grange. |

 | Do you pay for cable or satellite television? You know there's ads on there too... might as well cancel that as well. |

If there were no ads when I signed up, and no expectation that there would be ads, and suddenly I was forced to watch ads before I could get to the content I was paying for, then yes.
Putting it another way that even you might grasp, if all the sudden you started seeing 10 minutes of commercials an hour on HBO, would you just change the channel to Showtime and keep paying for HBO?
Seriously, what are you thinking? -- Toolmaster of La Grange. |

Re: Earthlink, analyze THIS how often are you actually typing in the wrong address, while i agree it is lame and they should not redirect to ads, i also think that you should have better reason for switching service, its an ad, they are all over the internet, like every site has them, you can not avoid them, so what is one more ad...
but i do like the telephone analogy, as i would rather just be told that the number is wrong than hear any sort of ad. |

The internet relies on certain principles to work. Any tampering with them, no matter how benign it seems, is bad. What if they decided mis-addressed email shouldn't bounce but rather should be directed toward a similarly-spelled domain?
Type in something wrong? You get a 404 message, not some friendly search page -- unless you configured such a setup on your PC. Grandma may not care, but there are tools that rely on whether a domain resolves (to anything) or not. This "tool" makes every name resolve.
The fact that it's not any ISP's business to make money on advertising in this manner is only a minor point. Phishing sites buy keyword advertisements all the time. I can't wait till that happens and Earthlink is found liable.

If I have to take evasive action to avoid my ISP's brain-dead attempt to increase their revenue stream by breaking standard Internet protocols on purpose, then that certainly is enough reason to switch providers.
Read the experts' posts in this thread and the one last week. This does not just affect some browser error page. It is breaking a lot of non-browsing applications as well. -- Toolmaster of La Grange. |

Money changes everything I would really like to know how much Earthlink has made in revenue since they implemented this last week.
