seaquake : Finally saw Balance of Terror. Wow, was that thing cut up. I was a bit disappointed in some of the CGI/lack thereof. The phasers firing from the ship looked a lot better. The "airburst" pattern looked stupid. If phasers had that capability wouldn't they have used it in many other TNG episodes to find the cloaked ships?

When the Romulan Commander self-destructs the ship at the end, I was hoping, they'd cut off of the intraship visual to an exterior shot showing the ship detonate. I was disappointed they didn't change that.

Oh, and the intro where the ship flys to the planet and looks to be heading into a clock-wise orbit...then the next shot they show it going counter-clockwise....that bugged me, too. It was a visual mistake in the intro that they fixed in the second season.

I know, nitpicky....

seaquake : They'll keep throwing commercials into the broadcasts so it will reach that 50% level by 2030. Viewers who are fed up with it will either: A: continue to use their DVRs and FF through the commercials or B: buy the episode/movie via PPV for $2 and watch it without commercials.

I estimate that they probably cut 6 to 8 minutes of the broadcast to fit it into today's commercialfest. As I said above, my local CW station is playing them at 3am on Sunday morning. Obviously, CBS is looking to make the money off of these via DVD sales, not syndication.

BK3 : Talk about commercial time:
In the past, the amount of time that could be allocated for commercials per clock hour was regulated. In the 1980's, television was deregulated and their were no longer any restrictions on the amount of time used for commercials. This spawned the "infomercial". Now, the only limit to the number of commercials shown is the number that will be tolerated by the viewer. If the viewer stops watching the show (and the associated commercials) maybe the number/amount of commercials will drop also (I think this unlikely, judging from what I've seen of "corporate think" the number will probably continue to rise in order to make up for earnings decline. Then earnings will decline more, fewer will want to advertise on TV and maybe then "corp-think will change)

Remember when television was content supported by advertising? Now, its advertising supported by content.

Wily_One : Yes a couple of scenes were cut or shortened. This was to accomodate the longer commercial time in 2006, as compared to 1969.

Cyberscott : Overall, I liked it. Sharper, brighter, better sound quality. The opening and ending music that was redone was great. Of course, the "edited for content" was a little overdone. They almost completely removed the back story of the bride and groom to be and I do remember the conversation between Kirk and McCoy being a lot longer. I am assuming that these new revamped editions will wind up on HD DVD or Blue-ray in the near future. Might have to pick them up after the price of those players drop a lot.

Yup - the first episode they showed here was "Balance of Terror". Most of the visibile differences are subtle, so the people afraid of radical changes can rest easy. The overall quality also seemed sharper.

I have mixed feelings on some of the CGI, however. The blasts of the "proximity phasers" looked better in the original, IMO. The remastered explosions looked like something from a 1980's video game. On the other hand the way they fired was better, with their reflection showing off the bottom of the saucer section being a cool touch.

IIRC, Kelly's name wasn't added to the opening credits until the second season. There were at least a dozen episodes with only Shatner and Nimoy's name as main-character credits.

I think it was Roddenberry's hope to get Grace Lee Whitney (Yeoman Rand) in as a main character. A lot of publicity photos I've seen of the early days has her prominently displayed. But her personal problems took her out of the show.

Nightwing : They actually showed 2 episodes here. The first was "Miri" and the second was "Balance of Terror". The Romulan ship looked pretty good. The picture and color were much improved. There were to many commercials though and it looked like they shortened the opening credits(unless my memory is starting to go.) Wasn't DeForest Kelly's name listed in the opening credits before? Anyway, the new effects didn't overwhelm or take over the show. It all looked pretty good.

seaquake : Anyone catch the first remaster yet? I forgot to set my recorder for the 3am premiere on my former WB (now CW) channel. Obviously, they aren't all that worried about putting it at a decent time in my neck of the woods.

If the listings are right, "Devil in the Dark" will be the next episode.

Guess I'm going to have to wait until they're out on DVD.

Hey that's the same time when Enterprise is on for Sat and Sun on KBCW cable 12. I guess that they're not going to show anymore repeats of Enterprise for a while now. :( Another episode of Star Trek will be on Sunday at midnight too and it looks like it will only to be airing on the weekends in the bay area. I'm going to watch it every weekend of coarse! :)

Random ramblings in no particular order:
1. The Planet Killer really looks more menacing.
2. The damage effects on the Constellation look more realistic
3. Cool enhanced sparkly transporter effect

The name Star Trek "Enhanced" reminded me too much of *Wormhole Xtream*

Note to Paramount: Lose the extra monikers ASAP. They're not cute or necessary at all...

I see this steadily getting better and better....I can't wait!!

I find it rather ironic that it should be on CBS. Originally, GR offered ST:TOS to CBS, but CBS turned it down, saying "We have 'Lost In Space'. What do we need Star Trek for?"

When GR offered it to NBC, NBC bought it.

Wily_One : I'll be happy to see the updated episodes. I loved what they did with the retro glimpses of the original TOS-era starships in the DS9 and Enterprise episodes.

But those that scoff at TOS because of the dated special effects and cheap sets are missing the point. What made the show great were the stories and the underlying message of a hopeful future for the human race. (Especially profound considering the tenuous circumstances during the Cold War in the late 60's.)

Concur! What I was not happy to hear is that they are going to still show the series in 1 hour increments and chop scenes as needed. They are remastering the whole episode so to truly enjoy these updates (if they turn out well) you'll need to buy the DVD.

I think more than anything the remastering will make a world of difference. It would be nice if when they come out on DVD if they'd provide both the original and updated version.

Also, if anyone is interested, the animated series looks to be coming out on DVD in November.

Exactly. At least let's hope not since the phasers and the doomsday machine both looked horrible.

One thought did come to mind, though. If they are going to short this on network TV, is it going to run during and hour and a half span? The reason I ask is because I believe the running time for TOS episodes is 51 minutes (that's uncut). Most 1 hour shows are 42 to 45 minutes in length to squeeze in all the commercials.

The video was just an example of what "could" be done, not what will be done. The quality of the video I posted is pretty poor, and I wish I could find the original ones, but I don't think the people that did it have a website anymore.

BK3 : I watched the video posted here, then I went back and viewed the original episode.
While I do see differences, I do not see any "improvement". I also agree with what was posted earlier, I like the old doomsday weapon better than the new one. I think I know why:

The Doomsday Weapon was made of neutronium, which is extremely dense and therefore would be difficult to work with. The original showed this by having the device look a little rough around the edges. The new one has smooth and clean lines, as if neutronium was relatively easy to work with.

While I applaud the effort to improve the original, I just don't think that (at least as far as I have seen so far) the whole thing was thought out as completely as it should be. While spiffy new graphics may be fine, the full intent, meaning and understanding must be kept intact, and I just don't think this makeover follows through.

We must always keep in mind that ST:TOS was mainly about Gene Roddenberry's view of the future and how this future could be. While the action, effects and such were also a nice touch, fun to watch and an excellent vehicle with which to spread his message, they were not the end-all and be-all of ST:TOS.

My opinion, based on having been a trekker since the first run.

Here's an idea...

Why not explore the time travel stuff started by TOS [Star Trek 4], carried on by Deep Space 9 [Remeber they visited the Trouble with Tribbles TOS show?], then touched upon Voyager [Janeway became an ensign on the enterprise TOS], then missed badly with by Enterprise.

The series could put the modern time traveling peeps into any of the Star Trek series....
Might be fun for a limited run.

It might be interesting to see what the TOS looks like cleaned up and enhanced. One of the "cooler"
touches in Star wars was the movement of the piolets in the X wing cockpits as they went around the sun.

Logan 5 : This Proof Of Concept was created based on the Original Episode "The Doomsday Machine" which is my all time favorite TOS Episode....

Can't say I like the 'updated' look of the planet killer, or for that matter the phaser blasts from the 2 starships...The beams looked washed out and like they were dribbling from the ships rather then being a solid beam of light and energy that implied force and power.

I DID like the shuttlecraft launch sequence where it rose from the floor of the hangar deck like the runabouts do from DS9..

I think a makeover will turn out ok provided the following happens:

1. Keep the improvements as close to canon as possible. Look at the trouble Enterprise got in to with the pre TOS ship looking better then the Sovreign Class Enterprise-E from the movies or the original TOS era ship..

2. Keep Rick Berman and Brannan Braga AS FAR AWAY from this as they possibly can be. They poison everything Trek related they touch.

Let's hope that Paramount "get's a clue" and does the right thing with this....I don't know how much more crap the francise can be expected to endure before the plug is permanently pulled....

seaquake : Can't say I'm surprised to see this happen. I'm surprised it's taken this long for them to mess with the original episodes.

Just leave them alone. The cheesy effects are part of what made the show so great for it's time. I guess the next thing they'll be looking to do is replace the human-in-the-suit Robby the Robot with something more "robotic".

SRFireside : Oh God. This can go either pretty nifty or very, very bad. I hope they do minimal modifications to the original series. I hate to see another crapfest like some of the stuff Lucas put in Star Wars and Return of the Jedi.

Oh, and I know a few Trekkers who would take exception to any TOS Enterprise that isn't painted solid white with none of that metal panelling done. Official books already explained the reasonings behind that so if they change the "canon" I can see the geeks scream.
