I stitched these together as layers in Photoshop. My scope delivers an almost perfectly distortion-free field, so what was left was really just rotation and placement to get features to line up properly.

I can tell you I needed every bit of power and memory in this big 64 bit Dell workstation to get the job done.

The file with all the layers is an 839 megabyte .psd file, which (even with real power on tap) takes 20 seconds to load into Photoshop. Here is a small crop from the original mosaic showing the crater Copernicus, which is 58 miles across and is 2.3 miles deep.

Over lapped likely only as much as needed, and well tracked... and even then I have done some pretty sloppy but easily stiched full res 4 frame shots that took seemingly forever to render... this is JUST FLAT OUT DEDICATION TO A TASK...and OBVIOUSLY well appreciated,amatureand pros (like NASA) alike.
And even just 15 (again REAL precise if that few) and a lot of METICULOUS well choreographed mapping work!!!

If you mean the picture this thread is about.. it's made of 15 frames, stitched together in PS CS2. At least that's what the author said near the beginning of the thread :)

The short answer is yes, barely. Even though the Hubble is a very powerful telescope with a long focal length, the stuff we left there would barely occupy a single pixel in a Hubble image. And so it is not possible to actually "see" the hardware in any kind of detail. It HAS been photographed by other lunar orbiters.

In any case, the tiniest detail you can see in my 1600 x 1200 image is about 3 miles across!

No, there is no water there. For a true color image that's NOT been hypersaturated, please check here (warning, big file):

As you can see, it's mostly shades of gray with just a hint of color. You can see things in this image that are a little over 1 mile across including Hadley's Rille, which is near the Apollo 15 landing site and was explored by the astronauts.

Are there satellites that I can get that you can mount on the roof of your home and connect to your pc wirelessly to control the satellite and see everything in the pc and record video/photos? I'd love to get a thing like that. All those asteroids hits (Sorry, don't know the word in english) makes me wonder. How many times has the earth been hit that we (ordinary people, not NASA guys) have not even notice.
At least as many if not more. But the earth being a dynamic and living planet they get covered and erased, as well as many under water. (Which of course created massive tsunamis at the time.

There is the big one out west in the desert that can be seen. One blew up just before hitting, but flattened nd scorched several hundred sq miles of forests in Siberia just early last century.
Good point... There is another factor which you did not mention... Over time, our atmosphere brings erosion in the form of wind... Many craters on Terra have been erased by this mechanism.

They have a 38 megapixel image (6200x6200) available for download in either JPEG format (60.92 MB) or TIFF (109.99 MB)

I highly recommend browsing their gallery ( »hubblesite.org/gallery/album/ent···lection/ ) for some of the extreme high resolution photos they have. Just click on Show Options and then click on List Highest Resolution First. The first photo in the listing should then be a 18,000x18,000 (324 megapixel) image.

To the dude who wishes a similar full moon image: Full moon images actually are somewhat less appealing than ones at other phases because the sun is nearly overhead and shadows are greatly reduced, also greatly reducing the body's apparent contrast.

BTW, a wee bit of a trivial question for you all to ponder: What is the Earth's phase from the moon at any given time (in relation to the lunar phase)?

Ok so you never went beyond 100% single step that is what I was most wondering. Still even you went as high as 90% maybe... still very impressive for its lack of noise or chroma blurring (though none of the most troublesome reds)....then again given the size/res of the original... maybe not ;)

I shot the 15 individual frames in Raw mode on my Canon if that's what you're asking, and converted them in Photoshop CS2, then stitched them. And I have saved the composite image in Photoshop .psd (lossless) format.

Unfortunately, while I have enough moon data to cover a football field, I don't have quite enough stars in the starfield frame to extend the image width to 2560 x 1024, while keeping the entire moon in the frame. I'd have to make up more stars from another shot, which unfortunately I don't have time to do this evening.

I saved all the above images at a very high quality level (11 in Photoshop, I think it was), so you won't lose too much visually by editing and resaving once.

Sorry Hayward, no, I don't recall. Probably something wayyy over to the right, like +90, but I'm not sure. I probably was watching the image rather than the slider.

Looks like there are several who use 1920 x 1200. I used to run that, before I switched to dual monitors. Here you go, wide screen users!

At least as many if not more. But the earth being a dynamic and living planet they get covered and erased, as well as many under water. (Which of course created massive tsunamis at the time.

There is the big one out west in the desert that can be seen. One blew up just before hitting, but flattened nd scorched several hundred sq miles of forests in Siberia just early last century.

Sorry, I should have posted exposure details before...

This image is a mosaic of 15 separate and slightly overlapping 8.2 megapixel images from my Canon EOS-20D (unmodified), taken in Raw mode and converted and stitched together in Photoshop CS2. As you can see from the EXIF data, the exposures were each 1/5 second at ISO 100.

Though the moon is generally made of gray, dusty material it is very bright, photographically, since it is bathed in sunlight.

I mounted my 20D to my Meade LX200 GPS UHTC 10" Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope via my 2x Televue Powermate (a focal length doubler, similar to a teleconverter, which also serves to mate my camera to the 2" telescope eyepiece tube). Effective focal length was 5000mm f/20.

Looking through the viewfinder I swept across the surface in a zig-zag fashion, trying for about 1/3 overlap between frames. I triggered the shutter with my TC80-N3 remote timer/controller. I did the stitching by hand in Photoshop.

Since it is tremendously downsized from the original mosaic, which was almost 40 megapixels, and was taken at the camera's most noise-free setting (ISO 100), the data is very accurate, and thus I was able to strongly increase the saturation via Photoshop's Image - Adjust - Hue/Saturation function.

Heh heh. Don't make it completely black and white - it looks wrong if you do that. Desaturate it to, say, -80%. :)
