glemlin : The reason you can't access the modem once you've bridge it is the fact you disabled its internal dhcp server. You need to specifically assign your computer a valid ip (eg 192.168.1.47) to connect to it at this point. Also, if you can still connect when going straight through the modem, unless you reset it, it is not bridged. If it is bridged, cloning the mac address should work. If it doesn't ensure the router itself is set for dhcp (automatic). Check and see if the router itself is receiving a valid ip range (66-73.x) and connecting from the status tab. Otherwise, they may have to release the mac binding (the so called repointing they said they did). They actually just remove the current setting which is for the westell's mac address, allowing the linksys to attempt its connection and binding to it. If they were able to release it, they should have been able to tell you if it bound to the linksys or not as well. Otherwise, to do it yourself, bridge the modem, connect the router, ensure the router is set for dhcp and unplug the phone cable for the night. It should work in the morning assuming everything is done correctly.

Jodokast96 : When you turn off the modems DHCP, it is for the internal private network. You want to turn it off so that the Linksys can handle internal DHCP. That has nothing to do with the Verizon side DHCP. In a nutshell, Verizon uses DHCP to assign your modem an Ip on their network, and in turn your modem uses it's DHCP to assign the individual pc's on your network Ip's. If you don't turn it off you will have both the modem and the router trying to give out ip's to the pc's (and each other) on your home network, which could confuse the hell out of everthing.

[modem/router] Westell 6100/ Linksys WRT54GS NIGHTMARE!

BradP8 : I want to start by saying I have installed many wireless routers for friends and family, very PC literate and never had a problem setting up a network before. Until last night.

I had a total nightmare and still cannot get a friend's Westell 6100 Verizon DSL modem to work with a Linksys WRT54GS router. After doing all my research online here at this wonderful site, I had all my ammo in hand (how to turn the Westell to bridge mode, changing its address, turning off DHCP, cloning the MAC, etc). Figured I'd be done in 15 minutes.

After not being successful I called tech support because I thought I needed the PPPoE username and password. They gave it to me, later to just inform me that the modem does NOT use PPPoE, but uses DHCP to obtain an internet connection!

I had 3 techs over the 3 hours I was on the phone. The first was the best and seemed to know the problem, but in the end still passed me off to Linksys tech support (who were clueless) after having me make the same changes to the Westell that I'd already done as I read here.

Here's what I did to the modem:

1. Logged into Westell 6100, changed from Routed Bridge to Bridge. Reset.
2. Turned off DHCP.
3. Changed address of modem from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.2.1.

Now, at this point I was no longer able to connect to the modem, no matter what. Typing 192.168.2.1 would no longer get me into the modem's interface. For some reason the modem only lets you in when it's at the default address, I guess? Also, the green INTERNET light on the modem no longer lit once I made the settings changes.

So, my first question -- Now that I know we are using DHCP and not PPPoE as all the helper FAQs here point out, do I still change the Westell settings the same?

At any rate, I did go on to the Linksys and changed its IP to 192.168.1.10 (from 192.168.1.1) just to keep both devices away from that popular 192.168.1.1. I also attempted to clone the MAC address of the Westell, which I'd prevously recorded. Did many full powerdowns, many release/renews over this process. Nothing.

As long as I leave the Westell settings alone, connecting it directly to the PC gets me internet. The router also does assign an IP to the PC just fine when it's connected (so it's working fine). But the westell just does not pass the internet signal through into that router. I can not get an IP/connection on the router status screen with the Westell connected.

Can anyone offer up this tired tech any suggestions? I can't believe I wasted 3 hours and got nowhere.

What I really need to know is this:

1) With a DHCP (not PPPoE connection) being used by Verizon in the Westell, do I still disable Westell's DHCP, turn routed bridge to bride, and change the modem's 192.168.1.1 address?

2) Do I still clone the MAC address to the Linksys?

3) Should I still see a green light in the INTERNET status for the Westell? The Verizon tech last night who seemed to know stuff told me that Internet light should be out on the Westell. He even changed an entry in THEIR systems which pointed to the router, not the modem's address, which then further complicated my ability to get the modem to work direct connected. That's since been changed back, but what a mess.

Help?
