Wait!

You mean there is no QoS or Power-neutrality laws!!! OMG!

Hey, send me $200 and I'll send you a used but working APC Backups 1000. That should get you a few days of juice standby.
(new battery not included)

(I've a 1400va UPS for my UPS, do you?)

Re: Wait!

I have a 1000net. Gonna move up to a larger one soon.

On the main topic, we need another genius like Nikola Tesla to figure out a way to send power over fiber. Put the responsibility where it belongs...back on the LEC.

The whole service mandate has gone out the window. Look, they have generators and batteries, why not make them subsidize the same for the users? Let's make them take their "unfees" and buy us what we've have had for all these years. They wanted that Spanish-American war tax for their slush fund (yeah, I know the tax went to the gubmint, but it got back to the LECs one way or another). It's time for that fund to pay for something.

It doesn't need a genius - it just needs a very high power laser at the CO end, a much fatter fiber and a decent photovoltaic cell at the customer end. Oh, and some good lawyers to defend Verizon when the first person looks into the fiber and sets their eyes on fire.

I can't wait.

It's obvious you dont understand photo cells. They are VERY inefficient and a laser along a fiber would be no where near sufficient.

If you look at any practical solar based array, they are huge just to generate enough power to recharge the system batteries.

In case you hadn't noticed, I was being sarcastic. Although the light intensity through the fiber would be many times greater than that of the sun, the whole idea would be impractical for many reasons - safety being a key one.

There are many more practical backup power solutions that could be used. The simplest would be to use a lithium-ion battery instead of the current wet-cell unit. A Li-ion battery of the same size would have about twenty times the capacity which would be enough for most people. However, it would also cost about twenty times as much. What Verizon have done is provide a cost effective solution for the average user. People who want more can choose to pay more for their own backup device.

Actually, yes. And a pair of 1500's and 3 700's. All Smart-UPSen. When those die, there's a 8kw generator out back
