You would be surprised how many of us "little guys" can kick the crap out of the big boys. With the cost of copper going through the roof lately if any small telco is needing to upgrade their plant it makes no sense to do it any other way than with fiber. This story will be old hat by the end of next year.
I think we are at a similar point in our history as in the 50s and 60s when the telephone companies converted from the old magneto systems and steel wire to steppers and copper. Now we are moving to soft switches and fiber. Progress!!! |

 | In Ohio we have several Co-Op telephone companies that have built FTTP networks over the last 2 years. Co-OP telephone companies are also usually the first ones to extend DSL with line repeaters as well here. |

 | reply to cptmiles The question is who is paying for your network. |

There are hundreds of these small outfits sprinkled across the country and they are doing quite well for themselves and their customer-owners, thank you. -- Toolmaster of La Grange. |

 | reply to richardpor TWC's customers and share/stock holders paid for my network. |

cptmilesPremium join:2004-04-22 Swayzee, IN | reply to richardpor You don't think that it is entrepreneurial to operate a small telco? Customers are becoming more and more demanding everyday, even in the rural areas, and sometimes the only way to keep what you have in local jobs is to have an advanced telephone company at the doorstep.
By your statement it sounds like you are not in favor of grants of any kind. So small towns should not get grants for water/sewage plants, fixing roads, or maybe even a museum? Why can't advanced telecommunications be put in that same basket? My suggestion to you is to get out of Starbucks and see the world. |
