altermatt : Bowlby4, I already mentioned that notice---it doesn't relate to SMTP, it only potentially affected POP, and it was over at 6 AM. It has nothing to do with what this thread was about, although, as I said before, perhaps the maintenance then affected SMTP, a completely different issue. If so, they should have posted it. The SMTP didn't go down until later this afternoon.
--
The truth of a thing is the feel of it, not the think of it. -- Stanley Kubrick

altermatt : SMTP seems to be working again, but it takes a long time for the email to arrive at its destination. I'm hoping this indicates they are on the right track. Still think they should have posted this on their mail status page with an ETA.
--
The truth of a thing is the feel of it, not the think of it. -- Stanley Kubrick

altermatt : YES!!! Figured I'd come here and see if anyone else reported it, and was getting ready to post when yours came in. SMTP is definitely down here (NY).

LogLevel 8 (0x8)
864 8:0.0 Dialog: "Error reading from network\r\n"
864 8:0.0 Dialog: "\r\n"
864 8:0.0 Dialog: "Cause: Connection closed by foreign host. (0)"

LATE NOTE: Per usual, the Verizon System Status page is not yet reporting the outage. They DO indicate that this morning (between midnite and 6 a.m.) there was a maintenance that could potentially have impacted on RECEIVING mail, but nothing about sending, and receiving works fine so far.

Once again, I find myself saying that we can understand the occasional (and short-lived) outage, but communicate with your users, Verizon. Pretending the problem doesn't exist does not make for happy customers.
