That some people didn't exercise that option is hardly surprising. I think it's insane that anyone would pay $600 a month to lease a Cadillac, but they are out there in droves. People will pay for whatever they think has value to them. It's not your place to judge, especially in a "news" item. -- Toolmaster of La Grange. The Buck Starts Here.

The point is that the telcos know they are ripping off these people and raising the price is adding insult to injury.
They should have taken action to move these people off this ripoff rental scheme to a regular line.
This is a graphic example of predatory Ma Bell at he arrogant finest.

I thought this was the comment section? Thanks for telling me what I can and cannot do though, that's valuable counsel.
Equating leasing a Cadillac to being elderly and not knowing you're being ripped off by the telco is, as morbo suggests, a chasm-esque leap.

You have got to be kidding me! Hahaha what, your brain stops working when you hit 60? You can only be smart if you're under 35?
You kids! I swear some of this is hilarious ageism on the part of the young. Just hilarious! People don't get suddenly stupid when they hit their 60's!!
Look at this one for a real tickle:
>In 1985 she would have been 61. Maybe not old by today's >standards, but in 1985 that was old.
OK.... you think what is old or not old has changed in just 20 years? In your mind, was 1985 like, before they invented medicine, nutrition or exercise or something?
Jeez!
She liked things the way they were, she probably liked the old Ma Bell monopoly system. It was easy, you didn't have to think or study crap you don't care about, you called one company and got phone service - the "phone" company. Very uncomplicated and simple. She doesn't want or like touch tone phones and she doesn't want to study technology pricing or go phone shopping. She was happy where she was and obviously could afford it, so why should she change? To make YOU happy? Looks like in fact, whoever forced her to give up her rotary has made HER unhappy!
Sounds to me like the lady doesn't need advice from any of us - SHE'S A GROWN WOMAN - and makes up her own mind about what to lease or buy. It's not any of our business, have you not considered that?
Some of you people, I swear, so presumptive and arrogant, so sure you know "what's really going on" and every company on Earth is out to "rip you off."

So wait, $14,000 for a black rotary phone isn't a ripoff?
This place is apologist central. The telco is being sleazy and people here think it's cool.

Not if it makes the customer happy! Didn't you read the thing? She liked it that way, and it's HER money not yours! Being forced into some newer, cheaper technology you don't like and don't want by some bunch of busy-body do-gooders who think they know what's best for you .... now THAT'S a ripoff !!

| All through the 60s 70s the Telcos ran commercials on how you were committing a horrible crime and might even get yourself or a telephone worker killed if you should ever connect anything but the Telcos equipment to your line.
This was something that was repeated often and I am sure has a lot to do with the older souls on this earth being afraid to take the chance.
