Question

I have a friend who is trying to set up his Verizon/GTE. I myself have Verizon/Bellatlantic, but the GTE is different I think. First of all does Verizon/GTE use pppoe or do they give a static IP? He has an internal modem, and myself not knowing much about them, as I have an external Westell modem. What type of modem does GTE give you, is it a Fujitsu, as I have been reading on here? And is there a way with the internal modem where you can tell if you have sync or not? He has all line filters in place, and I think he said that he is having trouble with his IP address. Sorry to sound so dumb, but we are at a loss here. Any help or advice that can be given would be greatly appreciated. THANKS!!

Well, GTE uses a direct DHCP connection with a dynamic IP, no PPPoE. We ship Fugitsu SpeedPort modems. As far as the internal DSLmodem your friend has, he is better off using the one we send, that modem may not use the same standard that we do.

Thanks for the reply. I have to comunicate with him through icq, and I think he may be getting confused with his hub, rather than the external modem, and he might be talking about his ethernet card rather than an internal modem . He is using the modem that was sent to him by GTE, so it could very well be the modem that you mentioned in your post. thanks again I think he may have to set his tci/ip to accept dhcp, and to find his address automatically

You've got the right idea Paul. After changing this configuration it would be wise to reboot. Also, have him check to make sure the browser is set to connect via LAN and that all proxy settings are clear.

I got my friends Dsl to connect ok. Now he has a problem with speeds. He is getting 128/128 for speeds on the speed test here which is very slow. Any ideas on what the problem may be? He hasen't tried any of the tweeks yet, but I was wondering if it would improve his speed all that much. I know that it didn't help mine. I get 512/82, not to bad for a 640/90 package from Verizon in Ma. After I did the tweeks on mine it was the same. He's using a router, and I was wondering if there may be something he can do there to improve his speed. Thanks again, and any input would be appreciated:)

Yes, those tweaks will drastically help. RWIN will bring your download speed from less than 200k to as close as you can get to the maximum speed.

Well, there's no tweaks for the router specifically, He should run the tweaks on every computer on the network tho. It sounds like it might be a provisioning issue on our end. have your friend email me his name, phone# and address, I'll see what, if anything, I can do for him (it depends whose customer he is). When I get the email I'll be in contact with him via email.
