eliuri0 : Hi Sivran:

Thanks again for your response.

LAN-->Properties--> Configure--->Power Management
gives me the option to uncheck "Allow computer to turn off this device to save power". I don't see those words used there. I do see a line from the router plugged into one of the openings in the back of the PC. But I can't seem to find anything that might correspond to that "Intel Pro/1000 Network Connection" listed in the device manager under ; "Network adapter". This is the network adapter used by the LAN which IS connected.

The USB Adapter is a Linksys: Compact USB 2.0. It is inserted into a USB port in the back of the PC , and isn't connected to anything else such as a wire, cable etc.... This is the adpater which is giving that RED X Local Area Connection 2. It shows "unplugged" in the Network Connections Panel AND down in the Systen tray icons. Would you recommend I simply unplug this USB 2.0 removable Network Adapter? Should I merely disable that LAN 2 which now reads: "disconnected"? For the purposes of connectivity, could I simply leave that LAN connection alone?

Would appreciate further guidance.
Thanks in advance:

Eliuri

sivran : I see. Disabling the lan connection does not sign out of the dsl connection. Your router (or should be) maintaining that. Disabling the lan connection basically turns off the network adapter and stops communicating with the router.

Since you have two adapters listed, check the back of your computer and see if there's an ethernet port back there. If you find one, that'd be the Intel. The USB adapter would be plugged into a USB port, possibly with an ethernet cable connected to it. To stop it doing this go to
Network Connections -> Local Area Connection - Right Click -> Properties -> Configure -> Power Management
Uncheck the allow the computer to turn this device off option. If the Power Management tab isn't there, it just means that this isn't the cause of the problem.

Just to make sure- neither of you should be clicking on a "Verizon Online" icon of any sort to get online, you should be able to just open your browser and go.
--
Think outside the fox...Seamonkey

eliuri0 : Hello:

I use Verizon DSL and am connected via Modem and Linksys BEFSR 41 Router.

I occasionally lose DSL connectivity for sevral hours while the other PC on the LAN remains fully functional. This happens about once a month.

It seems the only way I can regain connectivity is to shut modem and router. Then I ask the other user to disable their DSL connection, and then reeable it. After that I attempt to reenable mine. This often works. But the other user isn't always there when this happens. So I can't get them to disable and reenable their Verizon DSL connection.

I looked into windows XP's Event Viewer to try to find a cause of these connectivity losses.

I see several instances of the following Dhcp Error readings, or variations thereof:

=====================================================

"Your computer has lost the lease to its IP address [SNIP] on the Network Card with network address [SNIP]"

For more information, see Help and Support Center at »go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

"Help and support gave:

Details
Product: Windows Operating System
Event ID: 1000
Source: Dhcp
Version: 5.2
Symbolic Name: EVENT_LEASE_TERMINATED
Message: Your computer has lost the lease to its IP address %2 on the Network Card with network address %1.

Explanation
This computer's IP address lease expired and the DHCP server was not able to extend the lease. No such error readings are found in the other user's PC Event viewer.

None of the recommendations given at Help and Support seemed to pertain.

Is there an easier alternative to the rigmarole I mentioned above of requesting the other user to shut off the modem/router, disable and reenable their connection?

It's somehwat disconcerting since the other user's connection is working perfectly well while mine isn't.

Any advice?

Thanks in advance:

-Eliuri

=============================

Windows XP Professional Edition

Zone Alarm Security Suite
