ooh focus on more than just that

It's not the warantless wiretaps in that bill that made me cringe. It was the proactive pardoning of himself from war crimes. Along with the part of the bill that gave the President ultimate power to capture and detain any "enemy combatants" a label which he can put on anyone, even US Citizens, even if they have never left the country.

"Proactive pardoning" of himself for "war crimes"? Just what "war crimes" are those? And, just HOW is he "pardoning" himself? Isn't Congress writing the bill?

"Along with the part of the bill that gave the President ultimate power to capture and detain any "enemy combatants" a label which he can put on anyone, even US Citizens, even if they have never left the country."

Yessss, I'm sure "the president" will have a personal hand in designating you as a "enemy combatant" and get his minions after you because he hates you. You mean to say that Homeland Security will have that ability, dont you?

The president does not have a personal hand in everything that goes on in this country, nor an evil plan to go along with it, nor can he just snap his fingers and everyone else jumps.

The fact is that we have to protect ourselves from this scum and even though I dont really care for the government having more power than necessary, I dont see where monitoring OVERSEAS LONG DISTANCE calls, or, designating people as "enemy combaatants" (which will come into play with some in the muslim enclaves like Dearborn, MI, who ARE such)will help take out the trash. I dont hear these enclaves denouncing the terrorists in their midst and, untill they do, they are to be viewed with suspicion and watched, simple as that.

"The fact is that we have to protect ourselves from this scum"

problem is that your trying to protect your self so much, america is becoming the scum.. whats the expression? becoming what you hate...

maybe instead of spying on it's own people and fighting 2 wars in third world countries, maybe america should start extending a friendly hand to the world.. instead of sending troops with guns..

whats the other expression, keep your friends close... keep your enemies closer..

the US dropped the ball on this one..

also.... regardless of red or blue, common sense should rule..

Give me a break for decades we've extended a hand to the world. What has it gotten us?

"Throwing our Constitution out the window doesn't fight these "scum"--it makes us more like these "scum.""

What part of the concept that the constitution doesn't guarantee your privacy on a national/international telecommunications network dont you understand?

As I said: The constitution only protects you in your personal papers and home. When you use the telephone, you are using a PUBLIC network, and, therefore, should know better. It's the same concept as when you put private papers in your trash. Once it is outdoors, ANYONE can collect it.

"problem is that your trying to protect your self so much, america is becoming the scum.. whats the expression? becoming what you hate..."

First of all, I dont "HATE" anyone. Nor do I bandy about the word like it was meaningless. It only makes sense to protect ones self, as we ALL do in one manner or another in our daily lives. The only difference here is that it is applied to society as a whole.

And, how is america becoming the scum because we choose to stand up for ourselves?

"maybe instead of spying on it's own people and fighting 2 wars in third world countries, maybe america should start extending a friendly hand to the world.. instead of sending troops with guns.."

Tell me...HOW LONG must we try "extending a friendly hand" to the world, only to have it bitten off, or, shit on?

You dont seem to get the idea that these people hate us because to them we are INFIDELS and, therefore, scum, because we dont follow their religion that they have been steeped in since they were born and which controls their entire lives.

They DONT CARE if we "extend a friendly hand" to them. They will kill us anyway as Allah commands them to do, in a most bloody fashon. Comes a time when you either stand for yourself, or, you DIE, understand?

On one hand, we revel in being the #1 country in the world. Rich and free beyond a unbelievable dream to the rest of the world, yet it seems we are more and more pansies when it comes to looking after our interests in the world and protecting ourselves.

Bottom line is that we have to do what we have to do. If we dont stand and fight for what is right, not only for us as a nation, but the rest of the world, how can we have any credibility in the rest of the world?

Doing "good" doesn't always yield positive results, but it is still the proper place to be fore a country such as ours. It certainly isn't our place to drag ourselves down to the level of the regimes we're attempting to replace with something "better" and we will absolutely not yield better international results with our current campaigns of fear (see the Middle east on why those are bad).

Not everyone likes a friendly person, but very few like pugilistic SOBs.

I'd really rather enjoy not harboring the world against us, eh?

I see. Freeing 50 million people from a murdering scumbag dictator isn't doing good works, eh? Freeing the millions in Afghanistan from the Taliban and it's religious oppression either, right? We are dragging our selves down by fighting for these people and giving them the chance at something better?

Or, is it that you just cant stand the idea that america is #1 in the world and that, being #1, we are the leaders of the free world with the power to back it up when we need to?

You see, if it weren't for us, the rest of the world (INCLUDING the mideast) would be goose stepping and calling each other comrade, which they have conveniently forgotten these days.

But then, I suppose you think winning WW 2 and then standing off the USSR during the "cold war" (never mind the Korean "conflict) wasn't good works, either? Never mind all the men that died in them?

Thing is, we dont have to kiss the worlds ass and, frankly, if they dont like it, they can eat shit. If they were in our shoes, they would be exactly the same way about it as we are.

There is no point in having the power if you are too much of a limp wristed pansy to use it. It's just human nature.

It's allright being friendly untill someone comes up and sucker punches you (9/11). When that happens, it's time to get down and boogie and no mistake.

And, if the whole world is against us, why have they allmost universally adopted our system in one manner or another?

Because they LIKE it, of course.
