Re: NSW 2006 - Norton Unerase broken by recent Symevent updates

I'm sorry you went all through that but I will never, ever format and reinstall Windows to fix any issue with any program. Even Windows XP itself doesn't require this to fix problems with Windows (it has a repair option).

From my conversations with Symantec support, I'm convinced they've never used any of the Symantec programs that they are supposedly supporting. If they did, they could basically try doing what the customer says he/she did and see the problems for themselves instead of always recommending a reinstall for every problem.

They barely even read what I write in my email. I've been trying to go through support to report that many of the context help links in NIS 2006 don't actually bring me to help on that topic. I happened to mentioned I had NSW 2006 installed so the support person responded that "I understand from your message that you are unable to use the options under Norton System Works."

No where did I say any thing about "options" in my email. It's like I'm talking to one of those dumb voice mail systems that never understands what you are saying. So I responded with "I understand from your last message that you did not read my last message therefore I am resending it." I have yet to hear back.

Sorry for the rant, especially since Symantec fixed this issue, but Symantec really needs to dump their support or at least give them copies of the software they are supposed to be supporting and tell them to use it.

Did I miss something, on my system using SymEvent 12.2.0.3 the Norton Protected Recycle Bin is still broken?

SvS, are you using some Beta Symantec software? 12.2 has not been released.

Did you mean SymEvent 12.0.3 since ranschultz says 12.2 has not been released. If so you should be able to get the update through liveupdate.

Speaking of which, it looks like »ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_···/symevnt was never updated with 12.1.3.6. It probably should be.

Thanks for pointing out that the FTP server isn't up-to-date. I'd asked that it be updated but apparently that didn't happen.

SymEvent 12.2.0.3 dated October 10 2006 is shipping with the released version of Norton Confidential (1.1.0.26). Running this version of SymEvent the Norton Protected Recycle Bin is still broken.

If the version of SymEvent which contains the fix for this is 12.1.3.6 it will not install over my version I guess...

No, SymEvent 12.2.0.3 was installed by the ESD version of Norton Confidential. Looks like the problem was fixed but at the same time re-introduced for users of Norton Confidential...

You can always uninstall Symevent, then install the version you want to use...using the optional switch (/u).

SvS, thanks for pointing this out. You should expect to see a fix for the 12.2 version (probably called 12.2.1.x) some time in the not too distant future.

I have sent this thread to Symantec people about this.
I hope the Symantec people reading this thread start to realize that answering every support call with re-install their product is NOT support. They need to work with people to identify the causes and issue fixes. A user should not have to completely un-install and re-install a bundle package because one particular feature of a single program breaks.

Symevent 12.1.3.11 is now on the FTP server.

(Note - SymEvent.sys is 12.1.3.6, but the package is 12.1.3.11).

Update breaks the program, the only meaningful number to call for help is payola, the forum solutions are no help at all, no one else knows how to fix it, and last but not least- you work your best magic on it yourself but you only manage to fix part of it at best. Oh, and one more- the "fix" I downloaded, broke the very program it was supposed to fix...

I have only one thing to say to Symantec- that hole in your foot, and the smoke coming from that gun in your hand, might have a direct correlation.

And THAT'S why I no longer use Symantec products.
