Fade in a picture

EnzoM3 : I got a long picture, for a banner on my site. It's 770 x 150 pixel. I want the right edge's 100 pixels or so fade to either black or white, but without changing the color or brightness of rest of the picture. I tried a bunch rendering tools in Photoshop Elements 4.0 but could only do this by changing the entire photo. The gradient tool didn't seem to work. Can anyone help?
