Re: Questions

said by flect:

I downloaded Acronis mostly because of the positive things I've read here on dslreports. However, it seems like quite a major piece of software to install, with "secure areas" and the like.

Presently, I use XXClone (free) to clone my boot disk and synchronizing/zip tools to make file backups, primarily to USB drives. This works great and have saved my butt a couple of times.

Can someone explain why Acronis is a better solution and is worth installing?
DO NOT install/use the Secure Zone!!!
MANY horror stories about it!
Just store images on a separate partition or HDD in a generic folder!

Once the Rescue CD is burned, you can uninstall the program itself. the Boot CD has the whole running program on it.
*ALL* True Image processes are capable from the Boot CD.

I like to leave the program installed because of being able to create new images from within Windows.

Re: [Free] Acronis True Image 7 for FREE

said by jabarnut:

Also, I seem to recall that one of our many Acronis gurus, howie1 See Profile, will tell you that particular builds of version 9 were WAY slower than other builds, so you may want to hear what he has to say about that.
I've found that any build of version 9 after 2337 is about 1/3 slower than previous builds so I'm stuck on 2337.
Oh yeah, a note to any new TI users... DO NOT USE THE ACRONIS "SECURE ZONE"!
This "feature" (a special "hidden partition") has been the cause of more issues than any other in TI. In addition, I'd suggest using a second internal or external drive for your images if at all possible. Storing your backups on the same drive that you're imaging, although better than no backup at all, won't help you if that drive fails for whatever reason.

[EDIT] LOL! dadkins beat me to it! I guess we're on the same wavelength today....

I *DO* occasionally upload an image to an offsite server - just incase!

huge thank you to finding and sharing this!!!

probably wouldn't have seen it if it didn't make the front page, but I'm happily downloading now!

The original ftp link didn't seem to work for me, but going to acronis' site, then clicking "registered products" brought me to what I had registered to get, which also had a download link.

Great program, by far the easiest to use of the imaging programs out there I've tried. Never had one fail me yet (knocks on wood) even using their demo's!!!

Now I can have a free real version, this rocks.

Again, thank you purlander, and DSLR!!!

Thank you! There was a similar giveaway a couple of years ago; I think it was a PowerQuest product.

By the way, if you use your real e-mail address you might want to visit »www.acronis.com/enterprise/my/su···dex.html to opt out of all mailings and spam. I notice that at least the "Notify me about critical updates" was prechecked on the product page.

Personally I used the trusty »mailinator.com, which worked fine. (Side note: Mailinator's entry box is limited to 15 chars but it turns out you can add additional characters, if necessary, to the resulting URL directly.)

I've tried for a couple of spare registrations as gifts to others, but while Acronis say they're sending it, I haven't gotten them yet. Perhaps there's an IP address limit of 1. (If so, good luck to your NATted coworkers! Hmm. I just tried from a completely different public IP address and different machine, and still nothing. Either the registrations are slow, they blocked Mailinator, or maybe the offer's rescinded.)

Thanks again, purelander.

Yes..I have a 'special' Folder too.

On this particular Computer, you might say I have a "few" tib's saved on a separate internal hard drive. (The best setup IMO).

I would never have a need to go back to one of the earliest backups, I've just been too lazy to delete them. (And it being a 200GB Drive, I haven't really needed the extra space...yet).

As dadkins See Profile mentioned, it's a bit different with a Laptop, where you don't usually have the luxury of two internal Drives, so a separate partition on the same drive is certainly better than nothing, or storing on DVD's or a Server somewhere.

A USB or Firewire external Drive would be a good solution as well.
That's what I do with my Laptop.
Keep a few Images on a separate partition, and a couple on a portable USB powered Seagate Drive...just in case.

Anyway you look at it, I love my .tibs

(Edit) Hey! Nice to see you around B See Profile !

Thank you, beenieman. I've actually been back for a while, hiding out in the VoIP forums...

Hey, are other people getting registered at Acronis in the last few minutes? I still haven't received any new mail from my attempt to sign up from an alternate network...

Edit: You too, jabarnut. Thanks!

Vista/XP TI 9 Image
said by MarkAW:

Howie have you installed this on your Vista box as yet and if you have how is it running.
Hey, beenie...
This is from the official Wilders Acronis TI Forum:

Please be aware that none of the currently available Acronis True Image versions supports Windows Vista. We will implement the support for this operating system as soon as it will be released officially.

Please also note that you will surely be able to backup\clone partition\disk where Windows Vista is installed using Acronis True Image either from within the supported Windows version or in Linux based Acronis Rescue Environment, i.e. using 'Full' version of Bootable Rescue CD or Acronis Startup Recovery Manager also known as "F11 feature". You will be able to do this even if this disk\partition has some kind of unsupported or corrupted file system (see this previous thread for details). However, we cannot guarantee that the cloned\restored Windows Vista installation will remain bootable\function normally in this case.

Thank you.

If you happen to dual-boot Vista/XP (like me), you can easily image Vista and/or XP from within XP and then restore using the TI Boot CD. I've done this several times with 100% success.

It seems to go in spurts. They fail to send messages for quite a while and then suddenly allow a few out. Attempts I made an hour ago still have no mail, while 3 that I tried a few minutes ago succeeded.

I guess they have an hourly cap or something. That's enough then; I'm not even going to try for any more, to leave room for others to get in on the deal.

With luck, this will go as the Opera giveaway did; they were minting and giving out serial numbers like candy, and then the next day the product went completely free.
