This is very in tune with the spirit of google

Google seems to be very much into freedom of information. Copyright holders naturally hate this and this will likely start a second round of right holders vs. Google.

Does anybody remember when Google was being blasted for scanning books and making their content searchable though they never hosted fully retrievable copies of media?

Youtube has been in a similar hotseat where studios have been in arms over their content being posted in the creations of Youtube subscribers.

Unfortunately, books.google.com slipped under the radar and out of mainstream use. Let's hope the same doesn't happen to this service as well.

But then again, how many people check out more books than videos in a given month?
